Car Free Day in London

jjf | 20.09.2002 09:02

London boroughs planning full scale events (including street closures to
motor traffic) for In Town, Without My Car! on Sunday 22nd September 2002

Taken from www.itwmc.gov.uk

Greater London Authority

The Mayor has asked Transport for London to take the lead on planning the
GLA contribution to In Town, Without My Car! 2002. GLA's flagship will be
on Tower Bridge once again, linked to the new City Hall building. Will be a
partnership event between TfL and City of London, Tower Hamlets, and
Southwark.

Bromley

Geffreys Estate, Mottingham. Two ends of the estate will be closed and
reallocated to activities and a demonstration of how the estate could be
lived in if a Home Zone were to be implemented. A major activity, such as a
climbing wall, would be present, as would activities for all members of the
community. There will be a strong influence on reduced car dependant living
as well as transport education, road safety and sustainability awareness
displays. It is envisaged that the road closure would be turfed over to
create a high impact safe area that the community can use.

Camden

Camden is planning possibly the biggest CFD event in UK, a car free area
which includes the British Museum, a couple of University buildings,
including the main campus for UCL, two large squares, and two main through
routes. It is bordered to the east by Russell Square, Euston Road to the
North, New Oxford Street in the south and Tottenham Court Road is a five
minute walk to the west. There will be six zones in the car free area. Each
zone is themed and will have a multitude of attractions. All events will be
free and donations will be encouraged. The money raised will be split among
local charities including Coram Family and the Great Ormond Street
Hospital.

Croydon

Planning to close north end of high street (outside Grants) to motor
traffic. Company of Cyclists will provide demonstrations and opportunities
for the public to try out unusual bicycles. Other displays and forms of
entertainment to be arranged.
Ealing 1: Acton

The Western half of Acton's Churchfield Road will be closed to cars and
open for enjoyment. The local community will be celebrating the area's
diversity and cultural mix with a selection of live music, dancing, food
and street cafés, children's games, street art and other free
entertainment. Community stalls and help with bicycle maintenance will also
be available.
Ealing 2: Greenford

Ealing's second event will be at Oldfields Circus in Greenford, map here,
more details to followŠ  mark.robertson@ealing.gov.uk

Enfield

It's dancing in the streets at Church Street, Enfield! Street will be
closed to motors between Sarnesfield Road and Sydney Road (one way
traffic). This is the main retailing street in Enfield Town. We envisage
the creation of a boulevard environment with retail opportunities.
Involvement of local churches, schools and cycling and walking groups would
be important in promoting healthy living.

Hackney

Mare Street outside the Town Hall (A107 between junction of Paragon Road
and Morning Lane) to be closed to motors. There will be cycle training and
Dave Wetzel driving a bus.

Hammersmith & Fulham

We have decided to go ahead with a closure of Mulgrave Road, North Fulham.
The great advantage of Mulgrave Road is that, although it is on the
periphery of Fulham Town Centre, it is a key stage in a major rat run, and
there is a strong local demand for it to be closed permanently. There is a
school on one side and a park on the other, and the opportunity to connect
them. It is in the North Fulham NDC (New Deal for Communities) area, which
suffers greatly from social exclusion and the effects of through traffic.
Sep 22 can be used as a "planning for real" exercise, in which people can
explore what could be done with the space reclaimed from motor traffic.

Haringey

Two adjoining streets in the central shopping area of Crouch End will be
closed. Events are likely to include stalls, activities for children,
music, art, bicycle tours arriving in the area, rickshaw rides, street
cafes, environmental stands, and possibly a fair or circus skills workshop
in the nearby park.

Hounslow

The full length of Townhall Avenue will be closed from its junction with
Chiswick High Road to Heathfield Terrace.

Kingston

Castle Street in Kingston Town Centre will be used for music, entertainment
and games; and for campaign messages from local transport/environmental
groups.

Lambeth

Sunnyhill Road in Streatham from Streatham High Road to the junction of
Farm Avenue. Street Market, restaurants and bar opening onto the street,
performances from local community groups, activities by school children.

Merton

We will be having a Car Free Day event on the 22nd September on Wimbledon
Hill Road outside Elys department store in central Wimbledon.

Redbridge

Wanstead High Street - from Grove Park to Hermon Hill. Street will be used
for a French Market between Grove Park and Grosvenor Road (French Market
takes place on wide pavement on Saturday and on road on Sunday). The
remaining part of the street will be used for community stalls and
activities which at present include: Dr Bike Stand, environment and
transport display, demonstrations of pollution free transport, antique
cycles, Road Safety Stand, Jazz Quartet and Fancy Dress cycle parade.

Richmond

The Causeway in Teddington will be closed to motors on Sat 21st September
in a repeat of the 2001 by popular demand. Activities will include an
electric bike display, music and stalls.  d.pye@richmond.gov.uk

Richmond Park

The park has chosen 22nd September to close the roads to motor traffic for
20,000 runners who will be circulating around the roads on the morning
which will necessitate the complete closure of the Park to traffic until at
least lunchtime.  srichards@royalparks.gsi.gov.uk

Southwark

Will work in partnership with LB Tower Hamlets and GLA on the Tower Bridge
Car Free Day as last year.

Tower Hamlets

Will work in partnership with LB Southwark and GLA on the Tower Bridge Car
Free Day as last year.

Waltham Forest

Approximately 120 metres of Orford Road, in Walthamstow Village, will be
closed to motor traffic and parked vehicles for this event. The section of
Orford Road for closure will be from the junction with Eastern Av. &
Wingfield Rd through to the junction with Beulah Road. The festival will
provide the local community with a pleasant and safe car free urban
environment where they can enjoy a FREE festival of entertainment, live
music, environmentally friendly transport exhibits, cycling displays, fun
activities and many additional stalls, and informative displays.
