Resist the 2005 G8 Summit in the UK

Dissent! | 27.05.2004 12:01 | G8 2005

The following text is an international call to participate in a process of reflection upon past summit mobilisations and to begin organising resistance to the 2005 G8 Summit to be held somewhere in the UK. Please distribute widely.

For information about the next national Dissent! Network gathering in the UK, email:  g8gathering@yahoo.co.uk

Resist the G8 – UK 2005
In 1990, the G7 held it’s meeting in London . It passed by quietly. There were no protests and there were no 'red zones'. Eight years later, 400 social movements from around the world - under the banner of Peoples' Global Action (PGA:  http://www.agp.org) - co-ordinated local resistance to global problems. In the UK 50, 000 people came together to resist the G8 who were meeting in Birmingham.
In 2005, the G8 returns to the UK.
Since 1998, the summits and conferences of the global elite have been resisted in every country in which they have attempted to meet. This resistance has successfully delegitimised these institutions and strengthened the social movements that attack them.
But what does this mean? How can we continue to resist and push for radical social change which is more than a day of spectacular action and more intense repression?
Global anti-summit mobilisations have linked diverse struggles tackling common issues. These mobilisations have, over time, created a global 'movement of movements', in many respects historically unprecedented. But where do we go now? Can we get away from the role of the 'anti-globalisation activist' we are increasingly expected to fill? We want to keep our ideas and forms of action moving and evolving.
Since summer 2003, people have been talking about how to act against the G8 when they return to the UK. A new network of local groups and individuals has emerged called the Dissent! Network. (see  http://www.dissent.org.uk)
This network is very aware that it is part of a global movement. Putting on a day of action for people to attend without as much discussion and reflection as possible is a wasted opportunity. We want to work together with people from around Europe and around the world to decide what we - as a global movement - are going to make of this moment.
We don’t yet know where the G8 is going to be held in the UK so we can’t tell you to "come and join us". This is not a call to action yet because we don’t know what action people will choose to take. A collectively written 'call to action' will come later. This is a call to learn from our history and our successes; a call to assess our current position and our current strengths; a call to debate and strategise; a call to formulate a response to the heads of the world's most powerful states meeting in Europe next year.
We need to take the opportunity, at activist gatherings in Europe and worldwide, to discuss what we have learnt over the last few years of action. Please send feed back from these discussions to us at the contact address below.
Three major events where ideas will be discussed are:
· Peoples' Global Action European Gathering Belgrade, Serbia, July 23rd July to 29th July 2004. www.pgagathering.org
· European Social Forum, London, UK October 2004. www.esf2004.net
· Festival of Dissent! UK, location undecided, April 2005. www.dissent.org.uk

Dissent! Also has bi-monthly meetings at locations around the UK.

Where is the 2004 G8 Summit and are protests planned for it?

G8 2004 Location

The G8 is meeting this year, and in fact, there is action planned. However, the event is being held on "Sea Island", a tiny private island resort just off the coast of the US state of Georgia. I think the event is from 10th-12th June.

Here's the Call for International Solidarity with the anti-G8 actions in the US put out by the UK Dissent! Network (links to various websties associated with the US mobilisation against this year's G8 Summit can be found on the Dissent! website - see end of text):

On June 8th - 10th 2004, the G8 Summit will be staged on Sea Island, 80 miles
south of Savannah in the United States. This location has been specifically
chosen by the G8 because it is impossible for protestors to access and
therefore groups in the United States have put out a call for decentralised
actions
In this spirit of solidarity with actions in the United States, the Dissent!
Network, a UK-wide anti-capitalist network that operates by the People's Global
Action hallmarks, is calling for local actions and events between 8th-10th
June. Through a diversity of tactics Dissent hopes to make people aware of next
years G8 summit in the UK and the growing movement, which opposes it. Actions
could range from educational films and events, to street parties and targeted
direct action against the UK government.

The leaders of the eight richest, industrial countries may hide on mountain-
tops and remote islands, they may surround themselves by fences and police, but
they cannot hide from the global movement against capitalism. From the War on
Iraq to the global economic and ecological meltdown, the policies of the G8 are
clearly corrupt. In 2004, Dissent! and others are already building momentum
against the G8. In 2005, we will disrupt the G8 meetings in Britain. The days
of the G8 are numbered.

In solidarity with the United States protest movements, in the UK there will be
protests and events against the G8. To get involved contact Dissent!:

Creating an International Protest at the G8 Summit

05.10.2004 21:33

I've been thinking about how, lots of large-scale protests go on around the world, which aren't reported on by the western media. In South America, Africa and Asia, protests can involve hundreds of thousands - even millions - of people.

I have an idea for how we could bring such protests to wider attention (whilst also ehancing the impact of the local protests). By setting up giant outdoor video link-ups, we could make protests happening around the world part of the local protest.

Pluses:
+ The G8 will be discussing and deciding global issues. We should have a global response to them.

+ This could *really* increase the number of protestors - which will make a much better impression on both the public and the politicians. So lots of Brits will show up in Gleneagles to protest at the G8 summit, plus a good few Europeans and some people from further afield. Let's say we get 20,000 people turning up. That would make a good protest - but it must be only a small fraction of those who would like to turn up.

+ The mainstream western media will definitely cover the British protests. Given moderately-decent projection equipment, these televised global protests would make an impressive visual display. This would appeal to the mainstream TV companies, who should then give it some airtime.

Equipment required in Scotland:
1) Screen(s)
2) Projector(s)
3) Pa system(s)
4) And some decent internet links.
This might be easiest in Edinburgh (where big protests are being planned for the Saturday before the summit). However it should also be possible to organise in Gleneagles.

Equipment required elsewhere:
1) Digital cameras.
2) Decent internet links.
Note that the techincal side should be very simple. We would *not* need to set up video streaming. There would be very little difference between a live video feed and some video footage that was half an hour old. We can therefore record protest footage, then transmit it as .avi or .mpg files.

Organisation required:
Committments from British groups to provide the screening equipment, and from groups across the world to organise big protests.

I think this would be a great addition to the other stunts and protests being planned. It will require some organising, but it's eminently possible.
Please let me know what you think.
Take care, etc.
