CANARY WHARF DEMO goes ahead-sort of...

'persons unknown' | 15.10.2004 22:48 | Globalisation | Social Struggles | London

80 polis and loads of private security watch an entirely peaceful and unhassled gathering happen, with only 20 people present!
HIGH COURT JUDGE PROHIBITS FREE SPEECH/RIGHT TO PROTEST/RIGHT TO STAND UP FOR UNIONISTS AND FELLOW WORKERS

Canary Wharf management seek and get a high court injunction preventing TGWU trade union from organising a protest in support of (member?) workers fired/treated badly? at work. This effectively prevents TGWU, 4 individuals, and 'persons unknown' from participating in demsonstration (against what?) on private property (contempt of court as opposed to tresspass), and from inciting people to attend said or other demonstrations or to publicize them.

Interesting to note: Judge only heard one side of story (page 2 'The Order 1/and heard counsel for the claimants), 12/ Defendants have right to apply to vary or discharge order
(subject to going through 'due procedure' and paying the fat prick Blackburne his grossly excessive wage), costs are reserved and any appeal by any of the parties may mean TGWU, individuals, 'persons unknown' caught excersising their democratic rights may be forced to fork out the full sum.

In light of above and that while egress from Canary Wharf tube DLR is permitted but not if carrying placards, shouting slogans, or otherwise demonstrating
It may be worthwile to discuss the matter personally with the judge in his chambers, at a time and place of our choosing.
We could pop over to the claimants solicitors: Ashurst, Broadwalk House, 5 Appold Street, EC2 2HA, phone 0207 638 1111, fax 638 1112 Ref AYL/474C.00141/3540160
We could take the matter up with the court
