Vigil at Stockwell Tube Station for Jean Charles de Menezes, Pics and Report.

maquipix | 24.07.2005 19:29 | Anti-racism | London

A group of around 80 people gathered outside Stockwell tube station this morning to remember Jean Charles de Menezes, the Brazilian citizen shot dead by an anti-terrorist police squad last Friday. The vigil was also in protest against police slaying and the draconian use of the new anti-terrorist laws.

The vigil and protest had been spontaneously organised as a reaction to the killing of an innocent man by police special anti-terrorist squad last Friday in Stockwell's tube station. Although it was a dark and wet morning, people gathered outside the tube station from 10 am.

A banner reading 'Stop Killings' was hung at the entrance of the station, whilst a bigger one with the text "Their War Our Dead" was unfurled by some of those present. Candels were lit, and a few speeches were made by some of the people attending the vigil. Specially poignant were the words of the sister of a man that had died in 'police custody' some years back.

There were also present three cousins of Jean Charles de Menezes, that expressed their shock and horror to what happened to their relative. They also manifested their outrage and incredulity about the police operation against their cousin, a completely innocent man that had no links whatsoever with the bombings in London. Eventually a group of protesters holding the "Their War Our Dead" banner made a move to the middle of the road so to stop traffic and make the protest more visible, but this was quickly diffused by the few police present that 'asked' people to move back to the pavement.

Before people left at around midday, there was an announcement for another vigil and protest tomorrow Monday 25 at 6pm outside Stockwell's tube station.
