Picket at the Spanish consulate in aid of prisoners

@ | 05.11.2005 14:29 | Repression | Social Struggles

Solidarity with F.I.E.S prisoners - Stop torture and isolation.

The Spanish consulate was picketed on Thursday the 3rd November in solidarity with all prisoners fighting the F.I.E.S system of isolation units in Spanish prisons.

A banner was raised outside the consulate reading :
"Solidarity with Spanish Anarchist Prisoners, End F.I.E.S isolation units"

It is in response to the new wave of struggle in the units, in support of our comrades the Barcelona 6, and all others who fight against the prison system of torture and isolation.

Please distribute this information:

-----------

Stop torture in Spanish prisons!

No more F.I.E.S. Isolation units!

The isolation units are basically a method to control, isolate and torture prisoners that resist or struggle against their complete annihilation within the prison walls. (……………).23 hours of confinement a day in empty cells where not even a mattress is allowed and with constant neon lighting on the F.I.E.S. unit has been an experiment of different degrees of psychological torture together with regular and constant physical torture and beatings….

In the F.I.E.S. (Isolation units) at least 17 prisoners have died/ been killed since 1991 that we know of.

These isolation units are maximum-security prisons inside maximum-security prisons.
Prisoners and support groups are fighting for:

1.Efficient/effective medical attention

2.Free all prisoners with terminal illnesses

3.Abolition of these units and an end to the Isolation units F.I.E.S system

4.End of dispersion of prisoners (they should stay near their place of origin)

5.End of slave labour in prisons

6.End to sexual abuse in prisons and sexism

7.End to psychological and physical torture.

8.An independent investigation of every death in prison

9. Against long term prison sentences (the longest people can spend in prison is 40 years at present)

It is now 2 years that 7 anarchist comrades from Barcelona Rafa, Carol, Igor, Joaquim, Teo and Roger were arrested. After 5 days in police custody without the possibility of contact with their lawyer, 5 of them were moved to F.I.E.S. units. In the last month they have suffered increasing repression with more and more beatings, segregation and threat of being moved or “ghosted” constantly from prison to prison. This practice is a manoeuvre of the prison authorities to make even more unbearable the daily life of prisoners, de-structuring the few relationships that one manages to create. This week the 5 anarchists together with other prisoners have begun a series of protests denouncing the brutality of this prison regime. Up to now this protest has spread to F.I.E.S. units from four different prisons, Valdemoro, Alcala Meco, Soto del Real and Brieva.

SOLIDARITY WITH RAFA, CAROL, IGOR, JOAQUIM AND ROGER!

If you want to call the director of the prison to have more information about the recent beating of RAFA in VALDEMORO PRISON please call: 0034918948000 or FAX: 0034 916924060.

------------------------------------

F.I.E.S. Prisoners request urgent solidarity

Over the last month, Rafa and his cell mate, Javi (a prisoner from the communist armed group “GRAPO”) have suffered harder repression in prison. Rafa was arrested in September 16th, 2003 in Barcelona, and has been on remand since then. He and 5 other anarchists are being accused of belonging to an armed anarchist cell that carried out actions in solidarity with people arrested at the European Summit in Thessaloniki in 2003. The prison director has decided to separate them after their protests against the regime. They have been beaten, isolated and threatened with dispersal. They both have been separated as a way to make their life in prison even more unbearable, destroying the little relationship they are able to create.

For the moment Rafa has been given 2 periods of isolation lasting 32 days each. In solidarity some political prisoners from Brieva (women´s prison) refused to leave their cells in protest on October 13th. In the Soto del Real prison there were also protests in solidarity with Rafa and Javi. This has resulted in the transfer of Francesco Gioia (Italian anarchist arrested some months ago in Barcelona) to the prison of Alcal -Meco, after being isolated for 3 days for protesting with Igor (of the “Barcelona 6”)
This kind of situation wouldn´t be possible if there was stronger support from the outside, our comrades would get more respect from the guards as they wouldn´t be so confident in acting with impunity. We encourage everyone to express solidarity in any way possible.
