Shoreham Airport petition

West Sussex resident | 10.11.2005 20:00 | Ecology | South Coast

An online petition has been set up by people opposing expansion at Shoreham Airport in West Sussex.

It aims to add to the largely unvoiced opposition locally
to the plans.
The link is at www.petitionthem.com and the
petition is entitled Stop Shoreham Airport expansion
(Ssh!) (no. 4). You have the option of signing and not
revealing your name but unfortunately it does also ask that you
submit an email address so that you can be verified as
a legitimate person.
Obviously petitions aren't for everyone, but maybe it wouldn't do any harm to sign?

Shoreham Airport should be expanded

21.01.2006 13:50

This is the oldest Airport in the world, in the past it has been repressed because of the narrow mindedness of Brighton and Worthing Councils, it was there long before any of the residents or the houses they live in, if you were so worried about having aeroplanes flying over head, you shouldn't have moved there in the first place!
Having got that off my chest, I would point out, that due to the A27 in the north and the A259 to the south there is little room to expand anyway, as far as scheduled flights are concerned, they were operated before WW11and afterwards, mainly to the Channel Islands, along the coast westwards and France, because of the Airports restricted size you can only operate small aircraft anyway and any commercial planes operating from there will be subject to noise abatement anyway!
So I believe that you have very little to fear from flying from this historic airport, lastly I am sorry but I do not feel convinced to sign your pettion

Shoreham airport should not be expanded

29.01.2006 12:43

Sir,

You are correct when you say that if we didn't like planes we shouldn't have moved here in the first place, when we moved here we were aware of the small planes but did not anticipate more flights which would include more jets!

Secondly, if this expansion goes ahead and the runway is aligned more in an east/west direction, the planes will take off or land over more residential houses making the noise for us that live here even worse. These planes (on occasions) already fly extremely low over our houses. This airport may have been here a long time but what you don't seem to realise is that noise pollution is a serious issue now, unlike many years ago. I myself enjoy the tranquillity of my location which is spoilt by the planes that fly now and am totally opposed to even more noise.

Your pilots could do more to help the situation by taking off and clearing off, including the idiots who do aerobatics above Shoreham and think they are the bees knees and everyone is looking up to admire those magnificent men in there flying machine. We are not. Noise pollution is a serious issue. They ought to be made to clear off, and spread the noise pollution instead of inflicting it on the residence of Shoreham. Why not show off over the sea, then if an accident happens, only the pilot and friends would perish. (Could it be that there is no point in showing off if there isn't an audience.)

Please remember that you are a 'few' who inflict your noise on the 'many' and I, for the first time in my life will motivate myself to assist in this petition in anyway I can, and if that includes trudging around peoples houses to obtain the required signatures, I will do it.

In my opinion the airport should close and then it will not be a financial burden on the rate payers and we could all have some peace. You have a perfectly good airport at Gatwick
.
I have no objection to you putting a copy of this Email in the pilots rest room, it may do us suffers of noise some good. (Though I doubt it)

Thank you for your time

David Searle

Keep flying at Shoreham - don't support this sort of selfishness!

23.12.2007 15:48

Shoreham is the ONLY aerodrome with a hard runway available to light private aircraft in the whole of Sussex. In France or the USA there is one for every town (as there should be).

Gatwick is not available to light aircraft. The assertion that Shoreham should be closed is as selfish as someone insisting that every road near to them should be closed to all vehicular traffic.

I don't think aircraft noise is that bad, even near LGW where I live. Double-glazing makes it 100% silent inside and outside one has to accept that there will be other people with their activities that cause minor annoyance (like lawnmower, motorbikes etc). That is the price you pay for living in a built-up area, one has to have some tolerance.

Shoreham is now privately owned and not subsidised by tax-payers. I can't see the local demand for scheduled flights growing much. Even if a larger runway was installed, it would only mean the occasional hiss of a BAe 146 (whisper jet). London City airport operates very close to residents and with steep approach paths and modern technology it is a good neighbour.

Airports should be kept open, too many are allowed to fall into disuse (eg Dunsfold) and this denies future generations an essential amenity as well as a recreational facility. There will always be a few intolerant busybodies trying to stop everything, but most people are wiser than that.

James
