BEIRUT, Lebanon - Hezbollah fighters battled Israeli commandos who landed near the militants' stronghold deep inside Lebanon early Saturday, killing one soldier, in the first large-scale violation of the U.N.-brokered cease-fire between the sides.
Hezbollah said its guerrillas foiled the raid after a gunbattle, and the Israeli army said one soldier was killed and two were wounded, one seriously.
Witnesses said Israeli missiles destroyed a bridge during the raid — the first major violation of the U.N.-imposed cease-fire that took effect Monday following 34 days of fighting.
The Israeli army said the special forces operation aimed "to prevent and interfere with terror activity against Israel, especially the smuggling of arms from Iran and Syria to Hezbollah." It said the commando team completed its mission.
The army said such operations would be carried out until "an effective monitoring unit" of Lebanese or multinational troops was in place.
"If the Syrians and Iran continue to arm Hezbollah in violation of the (U.N. cease-fire) resolution, Israel is entitled to act to defend the principle of the arms embargo," Israeli foreign ministry spokesman Mark Regev said.
Hezbollah TV and Lebanese security officials said Israeli helicopters dropped off a commando team outside the village of Boudai west of Baalbek in eastern Lebanon.
The officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to release information to the media, said the Israelis apparently were seeking a guerrilla target in a nearby school but had no other details. The officials also reported heavy overflights of Israeli jets.
Lebanon's foreign minister said he immediately informed a visiting U.N. delegation of Israel's violation.
Such a bold operation risked scuttling the fragile cease-fire and suggested Israel was going after a major target near Baalbek — perhaps to rescue two Israeli soldiers snatched by Hezbollah on July 12, or to try to capture a senior guerrilla official to trade for the soldiers.
Hezbollah has said it wants to exchange the two soldiers for Arab prisoners, but the U.N. cease-fire resolution demands Hezbollah unconditionally release the soldiers.
Local media said Sheik Mohammed Yazbeck, a senior Hezbollah official in the Bekaa and a member of the Shura council of the group, may have been the target. Yazbeck is a native of Boudai.
Israeli troops have killed several guerrillas who Israel said threatened its troops in south Lebanon since the cease-fire, and warplanes have flown over the country. But the cease-fire allows military action in self-defense, and the commando raid was by far the most serious incident since Monday.
Lebanese Foreign Minister Fawzi Salloukh said Lebanese authorities found blood at the scene of the raid, indicating Israeli casualties. Salloukh, speaking to reporters after meeting with U.N. envoy Terje Roed-Larsen in Beirut, said he informed the U.N. team of the Israeli action in Baalbek and said the U.N. team would raise the issue with Israeli authorities.
"If Israel continues its violations, it is the responsibility of the (U.N.) Security Council to take action and ask Israel to stop these violations," he said.
A provincial government official, Bekaa Valley Gov. Antoine Suleiman, confirmed the Israeli troop landing. He told the privately owned Voice of Lebanon radio station that the landing party brought with it two vehicles that were later withdrawn after clashes.
Hezbollah's Al-Manar TV said the Israeli commando force landed before dawn and was driving into Boudai when it was intercepted by guerrillas who forced it to retreat under the cover of warplanes, which staged mock raids.
Hezbollah officials on the scene said overflights from Israeli jet fighters drowned the clatter of helicopters as they flew into the foothills of the central Lebanese mountains, dropping commandos and two vehicles they used to drive into the village when the Hezbollah fighters intercepted them in a field.
The commandos identified themselves as the Lebanese army, but the guerrillas grew suspicious and gunfire erupted, the officials said.
Israeli helicopters fired missiles as the commandos withdrew and flew out of the area an hour later, they said.
Witnesses saw bandages and syringes at the site. The also saw a destroyed bridge about 500 yards from the area where the landing took place, after missiles were fired by Israeli aircraft.
Overflights were reported Friday night in the same area.
Israel said late Friday its warplanes have not attacked Lebanon since the cease-fire took effect.
Baalbek is the birthplace of the Iranian and Syrian-backed Hezbollah. The area in the eastern Bekaa Valley, 60 miles north of the Israeli border, is a major guerrilla stronghold.
The U.N. Security Council cease-fire resolution calls for an immediate cessation by Hezbollah of all attacks and the immediate cessation by Israel of all offensive military operations.
In letters to Lebanese and Israeli leaders, U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan has warned the two countries against occupying additional territory and told them to refrain from responding to any attacks "except where clearly required in immediate self-defense."
Annan also told Israel and Lebanon that once the cessation of hostilities took effect there must be no firing from the ground, sea or air into the other side's territory or at its forces.

Israel said the raid was launched to stop arms smuggling from Iran and Syria to the militant Shiite fighters, while Lebanon’s Prime Minister Fuad Saniora called the operation a “flagrant violation” of the U.N. truce. An Israeli officer was killed during the raid, and two soldiers were wounded, one seriously.

There were no signs of further clashes, but the flare-up underlined worries about the fragility of the cease-fire as the U.N. pleaded for nations to send troops to an international force in southern Lebanon that is to separate Israeli and Hezbollah fighters.
A contingent of 49 French soldiers landed in the south Saturday, providing the first reinforcements for the 2,000-strong U.N. peacekeeping mission known as UNIFIL that has been stationed in the region for years. About 200 more were expected next week.
They were the first additions to what is intended to grow into a 15,000-soldier U.N. force to police the truce with an equal number of Lebanese soldiers. France leads UNIFIL and already had 200 soldiers in Lebanon before the reinforcements.

But with Europe moving slowly to provide more troops, Israel warned it would continue to act on its own to enforce an arms embargo on the Lebanese guerrilla group until the Lebanese army and an expanded U.N. peacekeeping force are in place.
“If the Syrians and Iran continue to arm Hezbollah in violation of the resolution, Israel is entitled to act to defend the principle of the arms embargo,” Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesman Mark Regev said. “Once the Lebanese army and the international forces are active ... then such Israeli activity will become superfluous.”

According to the Western media coverage, the conflict between Hizb-Ullah and Israel appears something along the line as this:
Hizb-Ullah, a terrorist organization armed by Iran and Syria, launched an unprovoked attack against an Israeli army border post. As a result some Israeli soldiers were killed and two were kidnapped. Israel had no other option to get the soldiers released. So, they responded by bombing towns, roads, and bridges looking for Hizb-Ullah. Inevitably inflicted collateral damages, because Hizb-Ullah terrorists were hiding amongst civilians.
Now let us look at the facts to ascertain the reality. Listed below is a brief synopsis of the conflict:
1. Initial reports stated that Hizb-Ullah launched a raid on July 12, against an Israeli army border post, in the process killing three Israeli soldiers and took two prisoners. Hizb-Ullah then offered to exchange them for the hundreds of Lebanese and Palestinian prisoners held by Israel for decades.
2. However, according to the Lebanese police force, and various other sources [1], the two Israeli soldiers were clearly captured in Lebanese territory, near the border area of Alta Al-Chaab. The reports [1] also suggest that the conflict began, when Israel troops crossed into Lebanon on July 12. Then they were ambushed by Hizb-Ullah; two Israeli soldiers were captured, eight killed and over 20 wounded in retaliatory attacks inside Israeli territory.
3. Israel did not agree to Hizb-Ullah’s offer of prisoner exchange. Instead, invaded and attacked Lebanon. It bombed: ambulances, cars, roads, bridges, airports, electricity, and residential quarters. Israeli Air Force bombed roads and bridges, and then asked the civilians to leave their houses. When the civilians started to leave under such difficult circumstances, they were shot at by Israel’s 'surgical’ strikes!
4. As a direct consequence of Israel’s 'surgical’ strikes, the overwhelming number of victims has been the innocent civilians in Lebanon, most of them are women and children. In contrast, majority of the Israeli killed by Hizb-Ullah have been soldiers.
This contrast between Hizb-Ullah and Israel, with respect to the number of civilian casualties is very significant. Israel has greater capability to minimise civilian casualties than Hizb-Ullah, because of its high-tech guided weapons that are capable of surgical strikes. Therefore, one would have expected Hizb-Ullah, with their unguided low-tech weapons, to inflict greater levels of civilian casualties in proportion to the overall number of casualties that they have inflicted, in comparison to Israel.
However, the reality is the exact opposite, revealing the mindset of Israel and Hizb-Ullah. Israel has killed far more civilians in absolute terms and in proportion to the total number of casualties. Therefore, the victims (facts) of this conflict have demonstrated the identity of the real terrorists and the real freedom fighters. Despite all the evidence, the media has managed to create the impression that Israel is the victim, who is acting in self-defence against terrorists. Listed below are the points which illustrate how the media has managed to turned this myth into reality, and the reality into a myth:
1. Frequently amplifying the case for Israel.
From the onset of this conflict, the ubiquitous Western media have been acting as a mouthpiece for the Israeli army. The Zionist leaders and the pro-Israeli commentators have been given maximum airtime, while the voice for Hizb-Ullah or Iran or Syria is non-existent. Confirming that Zionist tentacles run deep inside the Western based media.
2. Labeling Hizb-Ullah as the aggressor.
The media turned the aggressors into victims, and victims into aggressor. It is fact that Israel had 100s of kidnapped Lebanese and Palestinians in their prison, when it was screaming that Hizb-Ullah had taken two of its soldiers as prisoners. Also, it is fact that since the Israel withdrew from some of the territories of Lebanon in 2000, Israel has been violating the borders daily, according to the UN officials. Therefore, Hizb-Ullah has the right to retaliate in order to free their lands and free their prisoners. Hence Hizb-Ullah offered to exchange the prisoners, where as Israel sought to terrorise Lebanon.
3. Israel deserves aid but not Hizb-Ullah.
The media constantly rants about Syria and Iran arming Hizb-Ullah, but when it is reminded of the far greater level of military aid that Israel gets from the US, the excuse they make is, Israel is not a terrorist organisation but Hizb-Ullah is. This is not an argument but emotionally calling names. Most people in fact see Israel as the real terrorist, state-terrorist that has killed defenseless civilians en masse like a coward and a real terrorist. Yes, finally a real terrorist that can never be confused with freedom fighters!
4. Is Hizb-Ullah a terrorist organisation?
As stated above, nobody can dispute that the overwhelming number of casualties has been the Lebanese and Palestinian civilians. Despite this, Israel is innocent and it is Hizb-Ullah that is labeled as a terrorist. Fact is, even the US dominated organization - the UN, refused to classify Hizb-Ullah as a terrorist organization; Muslims and non-Muslims across the globe view the group as an indigenous national resistance movement. Those who label the group as a terrorist organization, they have only provided evidence of Hizb-Ullah’s retaliation, without citing the context of the far greater levels of Israeli aggression.
5. Concealing the faces of the victims in Lebanon.
The images of the dead Lebanese children and infants murdered by the Israeli forces were not shown during the initial phase of the conflict. Well after the second Qana massacre, when the emotions had subsided, some of the images were aired, while the likes of BBC kept repeating it was caused by "retaliation from Israel" or it was tragic but not terrorism or murder. Had it been Hizb-Ullah’s rockets killing Jewish children in Haifa, the language would have been: fanatics, fundamentalists, and extremists commit mass murder or terrorism! This disparity in attitude shows that the Zionist dominated Western media considers the blood of the Arabs/Muslims worth far less than Israelis or Western civilians. This reflects the Talmudic teachings of the Zionists and the racist (nationalistic) outlook of the Western powers.
In conclusion, the mass media is the primary tool for state-terrorists to give justification for their crimes. It is complicit in the heinous crime of killing civilians, because it conceals the much larger crimes of the state-terrorists. The media remains quiet on the causes, while the retaliation from the victim is projected in isolation as a crime.

From the onset of this conflict, the ubiquitous Western media have been acting as a mouthpiece for the Israeli army. The Zionist leaders and the pro-Israeli commentators have been given maximum airtime, while the voice for Hizb-Ullah or Iran or Syria is non-existent. Confirming that Zionist tentacles run deep inside the Western based media.
2. Labeling Hizb-Ullah as the aggressor.
The media turned the aggressors into victims, and victims into aggressor. It is fact that Israel had 100s of kidnapped Lebanese and Palestinians in their prison, when it was screaming that Hizb-Ullah had taken two of its soldiers as prisoners. Also, it is fact that since the Israel withdrew from some of the territories of Lebanon in 2000, Israel has been violating the borders daily, according to the UN officials. Therefore, Hizb-Ullah has the right to retaliate in order to free their lands and free their prisoners. Hence Hizb-Ullah offered to exchange the prisoners, where as Israel sought to terrorise Lebanon.
3. Israel deserves aid but not Hizb-Ullah.
The media constantly rants about Syria and Iran arming Hizb-Ullah, but when it is reminded of the far greater level of military aid that Israel gets from the US, the excuse they make is, Israel is not a terrorist organisation but Hizb-Ullah is. This is not an argument but emotionally calling names. Most people in fact see Israel as the real terrorist, state-terrorist that has killed defenseless civilians en masse like a coward and a real terrorist. Yes, finally a real terrorist that can never be confused with freedom fighters!
4. Is Hizb-Ullah a terrorist organisation?
As stated above, nobody can dispute that the overwhelming number of casualties has been the Lebanese and Palestinian civilians. Despite this, Israel is innocent and it is Hizb-Ullah that is labeled as a terrorist. Fact is, even the US dominated organization - the UN, refused to classify Hizb-Ullah as a terrorist organization; Muslims and non-Muslims across the globe view the group as an indigenous national resistance movement. Those who label the group as a terrorist organization, they have only provided evidence of Hizb-Ullah’s retaliation, without citing the context of the far greater levels of Israeli aggression.
5. Concealing the faces of the victims in Lebanon.
The images of the dead Lebanese children and infants murdered by the Israeli forces were not shown during the initial phase of the conflict. Well after the second Qana massacre, when the emotions had subsided, some of the images were aired, while the likes of BBC kept repeating it was caused by "retaliation from Israel" or it was tragic but not terrorism or murder. Had it been Hizb-Ullah’s rockets killing Jewish children in Haifa, the language would have been: fanatics, fundamentalists, and extremists commit mass murder or terrorism! This disparity in attitude shows that the Zionist dominated Western media considers the blood of the Arabs/Muslims worth far less than Israelis or Western civilians. This reflects the Talmudic teachings of the Zionists and the racist (nationalistic) outlook of the Western powers.
In conclusion, the mass media is the primary tool for state-terrorists to give justification for their crimes. It is complicit in the heinous crime of killing civilians, because it conceals the much larger crimes of the state-terrorists. The media remains quiet on the causes, while the retaliation from the victim is projected in isolation as a crime.
