SOLIDARITY WITH ASYLUM SEEKERS! Demonstrate at Communications House 2 Jan

Fight Racism! Fight Imperialism! | 27.12.2006 19:32 | Anti-racism | Migration | Social Struggles | London

CLOSE ALL DETENTION AND REPORTING CENTRES!

Protest at UK Immigration Service, Communications House, 210 Old Street, London, EC1V 9BR (nearest tube – Old Street) Tuesday 2 January and 6 February.

The brave actions of the detainees at Harmondsworth Immigration Detention Centre at the end of November 2006 publicised the disgusting conditions and treatment faced by asylum seekers who are imprisoned to a wide audience. Despite every attempt by Home Secretary John Reid and his sidekicks in the National Offender Management Service and Immigration Service to portray the protesters as criminals and saboteurs, the very fact that the uprising followed immediately after the publication of the most damning report ever into an immigration detention centre by the Chief Inspector of Prisons’, meant that these lies could not be sustained.

In December London FRFI dedicated its monthly demonstration at Communications House immigration reporting centre to highlighting the struggle of the detainees at Harmondsworth. In January and February we will again be demonstrating outside Communications House, and we urge anyone in London who supports this struggle to join us.

Immigration reporting centres are places of fear for asylum seekers, who have to report to them monthly, weekly or even several times a week. From reporting centres asylum seekers are often detained without warning and sent to removal centres, such as Harmondsworth, to await deportation.

I agree with the action but there is another side to this

28.12.2006 13:22

Although I agree with the campaign to alieviate the desparate situations that many asylum seekers find themselves in I'm worried that about how such campaigns can be percieved in communities that are being targetted by extreme right wing organisations.

For example: In Barking and Dagenham there is an erroneous perception that all those who subscribe to a left / progressive point of view are anti white working class. This has been exploited by groups like the British National Party and contributed to their gaining 11 seats on the local council.

Activities such as the ANL student activists turning up to events and demos in the borough with 'asylum seekers welcome here' banners and screaming 'racist' and 'nazi' at bemused locals coupled with the activities of racist communitiarian parties such as Respect has contributed to the rise of the far right in Barking and Dagenham.

It would be helpful if those in left / progressive groups put an equal amount of energy into helping white working class communties self organise for their own benefit and to resist cuts in services as they do in loudly campaigning for the right of asylum seekers to stay in the UK.

It is obvious that some people are NOT entitled to be in the UK and therefore need to be removed forcibly. Blanket campaigning for ALL to be allowed to stay damages the image of those who have genuine reason to be allowed into the UK. We have the ludicrous situation at the moment where someone with a medical qualification is not allowed to work for the good of the nation or is forcibly deported whereas someone with records for rape or other criminal activity such as refugee in the recent policewoman shooting case can't be told to fuck off back to Somalia.

I've no wish to see the BNP grow any more than they are already but sometimes the activities of those campaigning for asylum seekers damage their own cause and worse encourage the BNP. Come to Barking and see just how effective the BNP are at campaigning and convincing people that former public buildings are going to be converted into luxury homes for paedophiles and 'illegals'.

The activities of many pro-asylum seeker groups are feeding the BNP and others by giving credence to the opinion that the left only cares for immigrants and that left wing parties are 'p**i* parties'.

If we are to defend asylum seekers then we must defend the white working class equally or the only winners will be the neo nazis.
