Pipeline protest hits Brecon

Pipeline Pastor | 20.01.2007 19:38 | Climate Chaos | Ecology | Globalisation | Sheffield

Information and samba flooded the town of Brecon today as the protest took on a new form.

Local residents have been ridiculously uninformed about this deathly project that is ripping through their communities, today was just a small start at changing this. Protesters met with locals to discuss the project, show them maps, share information, tell them how they can get involved and bring music to their ears.

Work has allegedly already started in this area despite the fact the locals haven't been given any information from their local councils.

The pipe tears through the Brecon Beacons National Park, just one environmental devastation in a long line of ecological torture.

-

It is the twelfth day that work has been stopped at the Trebanos camp. Support continues to grow for the campaign with more numbers getting involved daily.
The pipe, to be 115 miles long rips right through wales, having devastating effects on the welsh countryside.
This action is just a small part of a big campaign to fight the pipe!
Currently we are occupying a public footpath stopping access to the construction site in the village of Trebanos. We also have a house which is a safe base to do actions from.
Come to wales and be at the front line of britain's eco-defence! Loads more actions
are planned and more sites too.

A Few freaks and a Pasting Table

Sounds like an excuse for a fun day out in South Wales to me. The activists all look like freaks (which indeed they have every right to do). But if you want to engage with the general public it doesn't help your cause.

Dresscode?

21.01.2007 07:26

What particular dresscode would you recommend for this activity, bearing in mind the need to stand around in cold weather? A neutral uniform grey with long overcoats perhaps? Arctic style anoraks? 1950s farmwear? Camouflage battledress? Site workers yellow with helmets?

More info

21.01.2007 10:43

If you want to get more people involved then a bit more info about the campaign might help.

What will the pipeline be transporting, oil, gas, or something else? Who's building it? Why are people against it? What damage will it cause? How safe is it? Who started the campaign and when? etc. etc.

You can't expect people to get involved or even feel passionately about it with such little information.

Information

Firstly why does what you wear or how you look affect things? Surely it is what you feel inside and what you believe in that matters. If our clothes and appearance matter, then come and join us and will will do a naked protest.

There is an abundance of information available about this project. Must we do all your research and work? I shall give you a brief synopsis.

The fight against this project started 2 years ago in Milford Haven by a group known as SafeHaven Pembs. Early last year an offshoot of this group was formed known as Safe Haven Network. SHN is a group of people from alond the pipeline route. They have campaigned against the project through several channels. There were a few places with particular concerns. Trebanos, where the pipeline runs 200 mtrs from the local school. Trebanos is built on a landslip zone and National Grid were going to using almost a tonne of explosives to blast through rocks to make way for their pipe. The main blast site was 44 mtrs away from the nearest house. Trebanos has a history of mining and the mountain the pipe runs over is disembowelled by mining. It is full of water and threatened to drown the village with water and coal waste should blasting have gone on. The DTI in London rejected the blast management plan during the first protest in Trebanos last November. However the mountain is still unsafe due to the constant pecking done by National Grids machinery.

At Cilfrew there is planned a huge Pressure Reduction Installation just 500 mtrs away from the village.

In Felindre there is another installation within a short distance of the DVLA and Morriston Hospital.

To Be Continued.

On Sunday 21st Jan, anti pipeline campaigners took their cause to Clydach Indoor Market
to raise awareness and hand out information about the controversial National Grid Gas
pipeline. They were joined by Rhythms of Resistance Samba Band, who came to play in
solidarity with their campaign.

Local people received flyer's and posters and expressed their support for the protest and
their desire to get more involved. Unsolicited contributions to the campaign were gladly
given.

Unfortunately after one man became aggressive and threatening, the event came to a
premature end.

The terrible carnage that has already been inflicted on the environment has encouraged
the local anti pipeline campaign to grow in strength. The campaign has attracted
enthusiastic support from the UK and international visitors.

The Rhythms of Resistance Samba Band also supported yesterdays awareness campaign in
Brecon town centre, which involved an exhibition of photos showing the destruction caused
by the pipeline and an information stall . Again there was strong support in Brecon with
over 90% of those spoken to being totally against the pipeline.

A Safehaven Network spokesperson said "The people of Wales are supporting this campaign
with renewed vigour. Support is coming from all over the UK. International anti LNG
groups are also sending their support including the Bahamas and California. We already
share solidarity with the Rossport camp, and have been in regular contact with Pierce
Brosnan's group in California."

"The pipeline protesters along with Safe Haven Network intend to spread the word right
along the route of phase 2 of this controversial project and beyond. Other pipelines are
being planned by National Grid and we are already in contact with people in those areas. "

"Resistance is growing. How far it will go is anyones guess".
