Brum protest against Home Office attacks on refugees - 23 June

ARC | 22.06.2007 00:58 | Migration | Birmingham

JUSTICE FOR REFUGEES AND ASYLUM SEEKERS! AMNESTY FOR ALL! NO DEPORTATIONS!

BIRMINGHAM PROTEST AGAINST HOME OFFICE ATTACKS ON ASYLUM SEEKERS AND REFUGEES

Saturday 23 June 2007, 12 noon until 2.30pm
Outside Birmingham Council House, Victoria Square, Birmingham.

The protest is organised by the Birmingham Anti Racist Campaign (ARC) along with members of many of Birmingham’s migrant communities and the organisations supporting them.

Birmingham was built and sustained by migrant communities. Refugee Week will be celebrating the past present and future contributions of immigrants to the life and culture of this great global city.

On Saturday 23 June, at the end of Refugee Week, we will be holding a demonstration and rally to demand citizenship for migrant workers and refugees fleeing persecution to seek asylum in Britain.

Speakers from Birmingham’s Afghan, Congolese, Iranian, Iraqi, Kurdish, Somali, and Sudanese Communities.

Music:

REGGAE SONGS OF FREEDOM WITH ZIMBABWEAN BAND, NGOMA

SUPPORTED BY

Members of the Afghan, Congolese, Iranian, Iraqi, Kurdish, Somali and Sudanese communities.
Organisations / individuals:
ASIRT, B‘ham No Borders, NCADC,
South Asian Alliance, Warwickshire Quakers Asylum Group, West Mids. PSC, Unison B’ham branch, Birmingham TUC Trades Council, Food not Bombs, Central African Development Action, African Community for Integration in Britain, All Refugees United - Wolverhampton, Comedian Lenny Henry, Playwright David Lodge,

These are our demands:
- An end to dawn raids and detention, because migrating is not a crime.
- No to forced deportation
- The right to work for all, independently of their migration status. Migrants are not here to claim benefits. Stop the pitching of workers against each other.
- Dignity and social justice for all, including the end of the government’s policy of enforced destitution of asylum seekers.
- Official recognition of rape as torture and persecution. The current failure to do so results in the detention, enforced destitution and deportation of scores of female asylum seekers.
- Amnesty for All. In the region 26,000 people have settled here, they should be given residence status as a right.

ARC:

Birmingham’s Anti-Racist Campaign (ARC) was formed in 2004 to fight against racism and fascism and in particular focusing on campaigning for the rights of migrants to this country past and present. ARC opposes immigration controls and believes that the terrible conditions that asylum seekers are facing are a consequence of our government’s draconian policies towards asylum seekers.
