TOUR OF CLIMATE ACTION 2008

The Student Climate Project | 10.12.2007 22:27 | Climate Chaos | Education | Social Struggles

Planning is beginning for a radical Tour of Climate Action around the UK's campuses and universities. The tour is being organised by The Student Climate Project, a new non-hierarchical collection of students from around the UK aiming to inspire radical climate activism amongst the wider body of students. The Student Climate Project needs more people onboard, and has its next open national planning meeting in Leeds from the 19th-20th January at the Common Place, Leeds. All our welcome!.

2008 will see a Tour of Climate Action take place across the UK's universities. This is the first big project of The Student Climate Project, a new non-hierarchical collection of student activists from across the UK aiming to inspire radical climate activism amongst the wider body of students. The Tour of Action will take place over the course of 2008, and is being launched in Cambridge on the 16th of February.

The Tour is going to be a diverse and exciting affair, with a combination of workshops, actions, theatre, participatory art, and more! In short, the project can be whatever you want to make it.

The next national planning meeting is being held from the 19th to 20th of January at the Common Place in Leeds. All our welcome to come and get involved. We have working groups covering the different areas of the project, and we make all decisions by consensus meaning everyone's voice will be heard.

The Project was launched this month at a Launch Gathering, where the consensus was that unless a critical mass take action against climate change urgently, then we have no hope reducing carbon emissions by the critical 90% before 2030. It was also discussed how students must play a vital role in being a part of this critical mass, despite the fact student activism is currently at an all time low. The Project therefore aims to bring together existing student activists, so they can work collectively to inspire the wider student body to get involved in the fight against climate change.

Additionally, the project aims to reclaim Climate Change from being all about 'doing your bit' in cute little ways, to instead being a political issue people can engage with emotionally and intellectually. Arts and theatre will therefore feature heavily in the project, as will discussions and demonstrations of the kinds of action we want to see.

The project is still in early days, and it us up to everyone to make it as effective as
possible. So come along to the Planning Meeting on the 19th-20th. For more details check out the website: www.studentclimateproject.org.uk
