Privatised nuclear storage base at RAF Faldingworth

MP says West Lindsey council must stop explosions at airfield
 http://www.marketrasenmail.co.uk/news/MP-says-West-Lindsey-council.376 9112.jp

AREA MP Edward Leigh lays responsibility for dealing with the contensious explosions at Faldingworth airfield firmly at the door of West Lindsey District Council - specifically on the shoulders of chief executive Duncan Sharkey.

“I will tell him he must use enforcement powers to close the company down,” he told an angry meeting of residents at Newtoft last Friday.

“They have the power but they have been reluctant to do it. Duncan Sharkey is the chief executive and he should get a personal grip on it.”

This is the second wave of explosions rocking villages around the former RAF station, causing damage to properties and misery for residents. Little has changed from the episode 18 months ago when West Lindsey took noise nuisance readings.

Pensioner Sheila Blenkinsop of Newton by Toft, is only now having damage repaired that was caused by the September 2006 explosions, and has to pay an Insurance excess of £1,000.

“It’s just as bad as last time,” she said. “The blasts are going on four days a week.”

Newtoft’s Dom Pavia said it was ‘absolutely horrendous’. “There is a blast every 15 or 20 minutes. Video cameras I’ve set up to record the blasts and vibrations have been knocked over. There are cracks appearing in my walls and chimney breast and ceilings have dropped.”

Mr Leigh accepted there had been some progress since 2006 in that enforcement officers had been able to get onto the site.

“They’re saying it is vital work in the national interest,” he said “but it must be possible to do that and be aware of residents.”

He advised residents to ‘band together and take legal action’.

“It is a scandalous state of affairs. I don’t think there is any doubt these cracks are down to these explosions and you would be perfectly entitled to take legal action against the company,” he said.

Mr Sharkey insists the council is working with both the site operator and local residents to resolve the issue.

“Our aim is to strike a balance with this company, which has 34 full-time employees and carries out a perfectly lawful business, with the wishes of the local community who want disruption kept to an absolute minimum,” he said.

He said the site was licensed by national government and West Lindsey’s role was to m
ake sure no statutory nuisance was being caused.

“Last year there was a breach in the regulations and the council stopped a different company from operating. On this occasion noise tests have not produced readings which amount to a statutory nuisance and the site owners have installed vibration equipment at the nearest property to the tests which are also monitoring the position.

“It is not, and never will be, West Lindsey’s intention to close down lawful businesses which provide employment for local people. More than 100 people are employed by this project both directly and indirectly.

“However, the residents have to be considered too and we will continue to work with both parties to minimise any disruption and inconvenience.”

Alan Longden, at Faldingworth, believes the company is just going to carry on.

“They don’t look at the impact it is having on the surrounding area. They’ve got a licence but that doesn’t look beyond the site itself. The problem is that it is in flat open countryside, surrounded by villages. It should be on a remote site.”

Yes, I felt it, my neighbour was still up, he felt it too, another friend rang me (at 1am), says he and his mum we're stood on their doorstep waiting for aftershocks !!!

BBC FiveLive had a usgs.gov official on stating the epicentre was 20 miles south of Grimsby, strength varies between 4.7 and 5.7 on the richter scale

 http://www.earthquakes.bgs.ac.uk/recent_events/uk_special/market_rasen _27_feb_2008.pdf

From wikipedia - mustn't get carried away but......

RAF Faldingworth was an airfield used by RAF Bomber Command during and after World War II. It was located close to the village of Faldingworth in Lincolnshire. It was used during the war by number 300 (Polish) Squadron and a memorial is now in place to them at the end of the main runway.

Faldingworth entered service life as Toft Grange decoy airfield and later as a satellite airfield of RAF Lindholme. Late in 1943 it became a satellite of RAF Ludford Magna.

After the war the base was used for storage of weapons. becoming a nuclear weapons store in 1957. It closed in 1972 and was later used by BMARC as a weapons test site.

Current Ordnance Survey maps show the remains of a typical wartime bomber airfield, with the former storage site overlaying the south-western part of the airfield, about 2km east of Spridlington. There is a cluster of RAF-built housing north-east of the airfield area, and a group of RAF buildings used as an industrial estate.

Blimey! Could it have been an underground nuke?

CCS influencing earthquakes?

27.02.2008 11:06

Very interesting.

I was just wondering about carbon capture and storage. The Norwegians have been pumping large amounts of CO2 under the North Sea for a couple of years, and we know that injecting water underground can trigger earthquakes. Maybe CCS has a similar effect?

BSG Press Release

27.02.2008 11:34

Here's the "Official" press release from the British Geological Survey, which puts the quake a little further north, and measured it as 5.2.

 http://www.earthquakes.bgs.ac.uk/recent_events/uk_special/market_rasen_27_feb_2008.pdf

It's not surprising their website was swamped with traffic last night. Oddly though, their coordinates differ from those released (within minutes) by the U.S. Geological Survey, putting the epicentre North of Market Rasen instead of much further South (ie. explicitly away form the air base).

The BBC are reporting ( http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/7266136.stm) that "The BGS recorded an aftershock with a magnitude of 1.8 at about 0400 GMT." However this is not noted in the BSG press release, nor can I find reference to it elsewhere on their website...

In fact, the BSC raw-data logs ( http://www.earthquakes.bgs.ac.uk/helicorder/heli.html) indicate that there was no noticeable activity at 04:00 in any of the frequency bands monitored. However it does log activity at around 08:00 in the "very-long-period" scale.

The European Mediteranian Seismology Centre (EMSC -  http://www.emsc-csem.org/index.php?page=current⊂=detail&id=79520) registered the shake as 5.0 on the order of magnitude scale, being at a depth of only 2Km (considerably less than both the BGS and USGS figures of roughly 5 and 10 Km respectively), and centred much closer to the Faldingworth air-base than the other estimates.

Obviously each estimate for the location will be slightly different.

Walking on Mindfields, explosions at base in last2 wks though no boom last night

27.02.2008 15:04

Just spoke to FALDINGWORTH POST OFFICE HIGH STREET FALDINGWORTH, MARKET RASEN LINCOLNSHIRE LN8 3SE, 01673 885 234
Postmistress at Faldingworth, says they have felt short fast tremors & booms in last few weeks from explosions at old nuke base on Spridlington road as reported by Market Rasen newspaper. Although this morning locals say there was no boom which is very good news just severe shaking, though 2 issues maybe connected. This needs to be investigated on every level.
This post office is planned to be cut as part of the 17%+planned, although its surviving & their is large supporting campaign in Langworth & coming national campaigns being organised from Nottingham, Essex etc.

Apparently all nuclear processing is done at Aldermaston, Burghfield, alot of ordanance & nuclear bases have large underground facilities which although usually away from seismic plates are a serious worry& another reason to stop nuclear.

But there will be a large underground facility built in 1960's+ going under all of the area for miles.

Still worth digging, explosions near plates can trigger earthquakes haven't had time to check geological maps & seismic plates, wageslavery.

Banda Aceh the epicentre of Sri lanka earthquake & subsequent wave where I had a lot of friends, relatives nearby has regions largest oil wells. Unfortunately no evidence of this has appeared from geological survey groups, this needs studying many like Keyworth UK HQ though are wageslaves for mining & oil contracts.
Locals in Sri lanka followed other animals & ran in land, tourists & foreign workers relied on callouts from media & relatives to hear news & get inland as government at first did F.A.& called out no warning!. Was this to avert panic or they could get away first?

Faldingworth

27.02.2008 15:19

The first result of a search for "faldingworth" on Google is  http://www.subbrit.org.uk/rsg/sites/f/faldingworth/index.html which has a history of the place.

Those who claim it is some sort of super secret place are simply making fools of themselves.

To the person who thinks it is linked to a military base...

Has it occurred to you that there is virtually nowhere in Britain that is more than 50 miles from either a military base, mine shaft, nuclear facility, oil well, airport etc etc.

So whenever an earthquake happens, all you have to do is join the dots to form a pattern which isn't really there.

Never said it was100% linked, but Faldingworth people demand investigation!

28.02.2008 23:00

my sentiments Tony exactly, people in Faldingworth think so, theres something fishy going on. There arent ex nuclear arms dumps that may not have been cleared still doing large explosive tests all time anywhere in UK & rarely nr a population that regularly feels the shocks, proven by Market Rasen Mail wks before.
Banda Aceh is a major asia regional Exxon oil well, not 50mile piddler local mate, I read engineering mags, my dad who I work for in engineering sometimes did the Safety Systems etc on Piper Alpha after the disaster, cheers. Nothing like that on uk soil, it could have been an explosion, there are hardly any ordnance bases that big. Except PLymouth,Faslande, Aldermaston & afew other places in UK, frontline for USA corporate defence system.
After nuke leak after quake in Japan this is a wake up call! especially with nuke processing plant like Raynesway in Derby.
Now go back to slagging of Daily Mail I like your criticism of them Peter old boy & stop being a rude boy ,please cheerio

Bristol blogger lies then disappears up its own **** over this story

10.05.2008 01:34

Tried to leave a comment about this story at the Bristol Blogger site which boasts
"I’m directly accountable to the public through the operation of an open and unmoderated comments system on my blog, which - as far as I can tell - is vastly more accessible and directly accountable to the public than anything offered by yourselves."
 http://thebristolblogger.wordpress.com/2008/05/07/account-and-accountability-the-blogger-vs-venue/

But it won't let me leave any comments - technical error no doubt ;-)
This was their distorted version of my Faldingworth ramblings

Scoop
 http://thebristolblogger.wordpress.com/2008/03/01/scoop/
".....Meanwhile - in this busy week for top journalism in the city - over at Harry’s Place they’ve been taking an interest in the vice-chair of the Bristol branch of the NUJ, Tony Gosling.
Apparently the brilliant investigative hack and public representative for the footsoldiers of our city’s media army in their endless battle to bring us the truth has decided that Wednesday’s earthquake in Lincolnshire was in fact covert underground nuclear testing conducted by the MoD at a secret airbase!!!......."

So here's the reply I would have left there if his accessible and directly accountable system was giving any other mesage that 'discarded'!

I happen to think that underground nuke Qinetiq test or cock-up is not impossible as you do.

I never said this "....has decided that Wednesday’s earthquake in Lincolnshire was in fact covert underground nuclear testing conducted by the MoD at a secret airbase!!!"

I have pointed it out as a possibility since this base at the epicentre is the only one in the UK licenced for explosives testing and has a cold war underground nuke storage tunnel network which has now been privatised (great!).

As your readers can see for themselves by googling up 'Faldingworth' the locals have been complaining of cracks appearing in their walls and the local MP tried to visit the privatised explosives nuts just a week or so before the 'earthquake'.

It may have been triggered by a deep underground explosion at Faldingworth also because earthquake experts have said the seismic data doesn't make sense, the quake should have been much deeper than it was to produce such a distant effect.

Some of these facts were picked up by at least one of the national papers.

Much more here:

Crikey, did you feel that?

Guarding a secret?

22.06.2008 18:04

I have been and seen the outside of RAF Faldingworth. I thought that it would probably been sold to a small scrap metal company (judging from the sat. photos), But something is definitely wrong there.

Dual steel fencing, Nightime infrared cameras with motion detection, microwave intruder detection units placed in between the dual fencing, double gates at front entrance and 24/7/365 guards on duty and that’s not even starting on the key card recognition logging times and 'open door' trip alarms.

The back entrance is a potential weak spot for security. On the back entrance gate they have huge signs reading 'NO Trespassing, all trespassers will be prosecuted' or 'Danger when red flag flying', informing you that they are explosives on site.

At the front entrance they is a sign of a company called 'UNIBAY'. So I Googled it, and it I found this page >>

 http://www.4rfv.co.uk/brieflisting.asp?scategory=171&company=36002&start=0

Which is where I found most of the info on the security there. Apparently it’s also used as a film set (see link above ^^).

My second thought about what was there was a firework factory, they is one down the road in Hemswell Cliff. But how would a firework factory pay so much on security, how would they get the finance. And I doubt very much that a film set would have that much security, even the biggest Celebes don’t need this much privacy.

Someone else mentioned something about a possible underground nuke test, which is what caused the earthquake. Gainsborough was ment to be one of the worst effected, it is also said that Gainsborough has underground steams, rivers and natural tunnels, don't you find tat abit of a coincidence that it was the one of the worst effected. Now I’m not saying your right about the underground nuke test or that you’re wrong, but it does let you see things from a different angle.

I still think they is something going on at RAF Faldingworth, and I wish I new the truth.
