Not voting again next Thursday?

(C) 2008 Kai Andersen | 30.04.2008 21:55 | Analysis | Workers' Movements | Liverpool

People who don’t vote say on the doorstep such things as:

“The parties are all the same...”

“My vote doesn’t change anything...”

“There’s no change whoever we vote for...”

On May 4th 2006 over 78% of registered voters like you did not vote in Norris Green
On May 3rd 2007 over 76% of registered voters like you did not vote in Norris Green

So is that it for another year then? All done and dusted for you…

The candidate leaflets and talks to locals

If the policies of the Labour government and the Liberal-Democrat council have caused you and the majority of your neighbours (3 out of 4 voters) not to vote surely a genuine alternative is worth considering?

When did not voting improve things for working class people? It was working class people getting out and voting in 1945 that elected a government which created our NHS and welfare state, built council housing and improved education for working class people.

The majority of your neighbours who did not vote in recent years are working class people just like you! If the majority of us are working class, including the retired and out of work then surely we should vote for a party whose policies benefit us not the multi-billionaires! Northern Bank was lent vast sums by this government but in contrast ripped off farepak savers were denied any government compensation.
Corporation Tax was cut again but in contrast low paid workers taxes have gone up. In short this means the low paid will pay more while the mega-rich will continue to pay ever less if anything at all.

Labour have shown since 1997 that they are definitely not a party for working class people like us it didn’t put an end to eighteen years of Conservative government privatisation policies, it is instead privatising whatever remains including our NHS. Many had hoped a Labour government would improve our council housing not transfer them all to private and unaccountable landlords like Cobalt Housing Company Ltd.

As a non-voter you are in the majority here in Norris Green but in council it is the Liberal Democrats who are the majority with Labour a close second. So the main party in council continues spending our money while cutting our essential services, closing youth clubs and old people’s homes all while putting up our council tax to pay for their capital of culture party this year. This is all because they know non-voters like you won’t vote for a genuine alternative yet.

As a candidate in this election, I would tell you that our party’s policies were put together by and for working class people. I would politely remind you that council housing in your neighbourhood was improved through estate action that I took a leading role in as a local community representative in 1992/93.
