President Obama's trickery

Alan Hinnrichs | 06.11.2008 14:34 | Analysis

It is understandable that after 8 years of the most odious rapacious vile and corrupt administration in American history people would be very eager to see change. However amongst all the hand-wringing back-slapping and enthusiasm that has greeted the election of Barak Obama no-one seems to have thought through what an Obama Presidency will actually mean.

Some indication of the course he might take can be gleaned from, whom he chooses as his political idols; firstly there is FDR the man who interned thousands of Japanese-American during World War 2 then, Harry S Truman the man who started the Cold War and dropped the two Atomic bombs killing hundreds of thousands at Hiroshima and Nagasaki and finally JFK who authorised J Edgar Hoover to spy on Martin Luther King and nearly started a nuclear war with the Soviet Union.

Then there is the endorsement from old Bush family friend and war criminal Colin Powell. Obama assures us that the man who lied repeatedly to sell the Iraq war, and covered up the My Lai and Halabja massacres will have senior position within an Obama administration

Barak Obama mythologies that most of his donations come from small $100 and $200 donors. The truth however is that he is the first democratic nominee to have received more corporate money than the Republican Party (mostly from wall street), they must have some confidence in his allegiance to power.

Obama in the Senate has voted for every increase in funding for the Iraq war that George Bush has asked for. Obama has already stated as President he wishes to increase man power of the American army by 20,000. He wants to increase US military spending (more than the next 20 countries combined). He says he wants to have an Iraq style surge in Afghanistan. He has given no definitive time-table for withdrawal from Iraq, no date for the closure of Guantanamo bay. Israel will be given unconditional backing and American tax-payer funds to carry-on its murderous campaign against the Palestinians.

The Patriot act will not be revoked nor will the Military commissions act. In fact Obama has already given an undertaking that no member of the Bush Administration will face even and investigation never mind charges for illegal wire-tapping, torture, breaches of the Geneva Convention or most seriously the lies that lead to the slaughter of one million Iraqis

Obama proposes no alternative economic model to the ravenous neo-liberal economic one which has so devastated both the American and World economies.

The truth is that the American imperial project will go on. Out will go the crude transparent propaganda of the neocons and the inarticulate ravings of George W Bush. In will come the grandiose rhetoric about spreading democracy and humanitarian intervention which will masquerade the real intentions of plunder for corporate profits and resources.

The Democrats have started more wars in American history. Under the previous incumbent Clinton one million Iraqis died under medieval sanctions, Yugoslavia was bombed because of a non-existent campaign of genocide, a pharmaceutical plant in Sudan was bombed as it was (falsely) accused of manufacturing Chemical weapons and mud huts in Afghanistan were blown up because again falsely Bin-Laden was supposed to have been living there.

The parallels between Obama in 2008 and Tony Blair in 1997 are striking. Blair was elected in a tide of optimism against a corrupt and ineffective predecessor. Blair (like Obama) came with empty platitudes and sound bites disguised as a message of hope and change telling the people of Britain, a new dawn had broken. Within weeks he was implementing a ruthless programme of neo-liberal policies that were beyond even Thatcher's wildest dreams. He cut benefits for the disabled and then privatised all UK government services. He became a warmonger and left the most hated Prime Minister in history.

Obama is offering those same empty platitudes with a few pompous celebrities hitched to his coat-tails

The American empire has found its new poster boy .In truth Obama offers no change from the neo-con Bush project just a more articulate voice. American jobs will continue to be exported and, dirt-poor people living in mud-huts in far –off countries will continue to be killed by American weapons of war under Obama. All in the name of democracy of course.

Martin Luther King is quoted as saying "do not judge a man by the colour of his skin but by the content of his character.” Unfortunately it seems that America has done the later and believes that Obama will be different from other bourgeoisie imperialist politicians simply because he is black. They will soon learn a harsh lesson
