Why are Stop the War holding a demo across town?

24.03.2009 12:31

On April 1st it appears STW are organising a demo/march from Us Embassy to Trafalgar Square. There are already the 4 marches heading to the Bank of England that day. This appears to be nothing more than a way to disperse activists. It is well known that STW work closely with the cops but this takes the biscuit.

Concerned

Or not

24.03.2009 13:47

Sounds more like a mainstream alternative to the more radical demonstrations. Please note I am not a fan of Stop The War.

No Conspiracy

STW

24.03.2009 14:11

I think STW are assembling at the US Embassy 'cos Obama is coming to Britain. I also think that this demo was the first to be announced of the various mobilisations.

Jericho

Fair enough

24.03.2009 15:05

They announced it first but this should really be the biggest mobilisation in years. Having seperate marches just appears to be a good way to divide the masses and if people go to both then the marchers in the city will disperse quite quickly. there is the red horse for anti war protest in the city. I just don't see the point of 2 anti war marches on 1 day.

Concerned

Different horses for different courses right?

24.03.2009 16:42

The Stop The War march and rally demo is a permitted demonstration which has sought permission from the police, while G20 Meltdown is just doing their thing without asking permission.

Judging by the media hysteria the policing style may be a bit rough and tough, or certainly involve trying to surround groups of people in several locations, so my gran is going to the Stop the War demo. I'm gonna go to the earlier ones then pop over and meet her. No big deal. The more groups of people on the streets the better!

It reminds me of May Day

read the Guide to Public Order Situations

25.03.2009 17:26

Read it at  http://www.earthfirst.org.uk/manchester/porder.htm or download it to print here:  http://www.earthfirst.org.uk/manchester/porder.pdf

It's useful for dealing with crowd situations where the police want to stop you doing what you want to do, and gives you an idea for what tactics you might want to prepare.

And any updates from stuff you observe during the G20, send them in to the email address listed in the guide (the manchester AT earthfirst.org.uk one - incorrect address listed in the PDF), or by post.
It's due for an update. Thanks.

to prepare for the G20

April 1 G2 Protest True Account

02.04.2009 12:31

My daughter was there peacefully on April 1 . Arrived later in the day. She phoned me that night when she was able, traumatized by what she had seen and frightened of the police and now of all she thought true of Britain. She felt it surreal in that she did not know what country she was in as the police were so brutal and intent on total control by force. She was being crushed in a pen created by the police for three to four hours. People could not leave peacefully to eat, get liquids, take medication if needed, use the loo or get assistance if they felt ill. When she finally was able to free herself and go in another direction, she witnessed a helpless man who looked confused and to be in the "wrong place wrong time", being provoked, surrounded and threatened by police dogs that were then let loose to maul him. Many other horrors she could not believe were being carried out by “authorities” on British soil. She thought she may awaken from a nightmare at any second. Why is the all media sugar coating this, not reporting all and true and placing all blame on citizens who came out peacefully as is their right? She felt she had to run for her life from the surging crowd that the police kept “pushing back” and from the police. You can SEE what was happening on all the videos as the police barricaded and forced innocent people back onto themselves. They were trapped like cattle for hours on end with no clue when they could peacefully disperse, find a safe haven or relief. Any normal person would be agitated, threatened and frightened to be crushed or trampled. How did these “experts” on “keeping the peace” expect people to react?? Just as planned, I suspect for a predetermined agenda. There needs be a thorough investigation as well as a public hearing to report incidents BY POLICE. This reeks of provocation, intent and police state tactics. Shameless and embarassing. What and who have we become?
