Stop Camden Bio Hazard and Animal Testing Lab Coalition meeting this Sunday

Stop Camden Bio Hazard and animal Testing Lab | 02.07.2009 23:40 | Animal Liberation | Bio-technology | Social Struggles | South Coast | World

There are plans to build a high level virus containment facility and animal testing lab in Camden, alongside St Pancras International, behind the British Library. The lab could be a level 3 facility which means that it could contain deadly pathogens such as anthrax and bird flu. The lab has been criticised by MI5, MPs, councillors, local businesses and residents.  http://petitions.number10.gov.uk/BLISS-Lab

There will be a meeting on Sunday 5th July at 8pm in Inspiral Lounge, 250 Camden High Street, close to Camden Lock beside the bridge to discuss the proposed lab plans. Please bring enough money to buy food or drink as the venue is a cafe / bar.

Despite the lab being criticised by MI5 the lab is backed by Gordon Brown, the MRC, CRUK, UCL and the Wellcome Trust.

The Wellcome Trust has put in 100 million pounds.

Local residents are against the lab on health and safety grounds. Foot and Mouth disease was leaked from government facility Pirbright in Surrey.

The meetings follows an earlier meeting on the same day for residents. If the lab goes ahead it will be built on a Camden Council house estate, Somers Town.

We are a peaceful community based campaign. Stop Camden Bio Hazard and Animal Lab is part of a Coalition of different groups, campaigns and individuals. It is not an Animal Rights campaign although we do recognise that many local people are against animal testing and we respect this stance.

Housing groups etc are also mobilizing against the lab. They are welcome at the meeting.

We are not responsible for the actions of any other persons, campaigns or groups.

What does - 'We are not responsible for the actions of any other persons, campaigns or groups' - mean?

SHAC tried this an it didn't work - if you publish targets and they get 'targeted' as a result you stand to face the consequences.

Why bother?

The leafelts and web blog "The Camden Sanity Brigade" are nothing to do with us.

03.07.2009 16:43

Someone has been creating leafets and a blogspot "The Camden Sanity Brigade". They are created by someone in an attempt to discredit a legal, peaceful community campaign.

We do not support the people who have created this blog spot and leaflets. The people who created this have an agenda of their own which we do not support. We suspect that they work for the pharmecuetical industry.

No one from Camden Danger Lab or Stop Camden Bio Hazard and Animal Lab has anything to do with this blogspot "Camden Sanity Brigade" including Tracy Morgan, Mandy Ford and residents on the Regents park and Somers Town estates.

I don't know about this but you seem to be over reacting. “OMG someone from outside our group wants to oppose the lab in there own way! They must be part of the pharmaceutical industry”

As the lab gets closer people other than your group will fight the lab and you may not agree will all they do.

ARA

To ARA - the leaflets were diabolical and a clearly deliberate smear.

04.07.2009 17:47

One of the people involved with distributing these leaflets has in fact THREATENED peaceful activists with violence and has demanded money from the campaign using threats of violence.

It could transpire that people acting on behalf of the pharmaceutical industry did this which would of course horrify peaceful workers from the pharmaceutical industry.

If this is the case, the pharmacuetical industry might not like the way that these people are acting on their behalf but there might not be much they can do about it. Although I'm sure that if those people were found out the pharmaceutical world would of course be horrified. Wouldn't it?

"As the lab gets closer people will campaign in there own way and you might not agree with all that they do".

As the lab gets closer there will be unscrupulous people who will fight on behalf of the pharmaceutical industry in their own way and you might not agree with all that they do..you might think OMG there are people fighting in there own way and they must be undercover Animal Rights Extremist Terrorists!

Or...OMG they could even be MI5 playing silly buggers.

P.S. Their is spelled their ..not there.

I can't see why anyone could object to it, looks fairly reasonable to me. Quite political, but then life is political.

Diversity of tactics is a good thing! So good luck to all groups fighting the Camden vivisection lab, however they choose to do it.

lets face facts

05.07.2009 18:58

when the oxford animal laboratory was being built work was stopped for the best part of a year due to the actions of animal rights activists who were willing to risk their own freedom for the sake of animals

the building contractors were targetted - their offices and depots were attacked, windows were smashed, slogans were painted. In addition the company directors had their cars paintstripped and their windows put in. letters were sent out to the neighbours of the company directors stating that they were peadophiles and/or rapists.

this stopped tha animal lab in its tracks for what must have been a very expensive year for Oxford University...

at the end of the day Mandy and co you are running a campaign which is highlighting the fact that an animal torture laboratory is being built in the uk's most heavily populated and easily accessable cities - i would imagine that direct action will pick up where you have left off and in these corrupt times it is likely that the only time results will be seen is when someone finally says enough it enough and starts flinging bricks through windows

i'm sure that your group will be very upset and will of course dencounce these "animal terrorists" but at the end of the day and to be brutally honest if people do start breaking the law it is a sad fact that one or two 'actions' will have a far greater impact on this issue than your whole campaign

i am not encouraging it or even supporting it, just stating facts/opinions based on years of observation of the animal rights movement

you just need to agree to disagree, drop the conspiracy theories and get on with your own campaigning

Re : The last point

This is why we must distinguish between a community campaign and animal rights campaigns. This is a community campaign - people here are a mixed bunch with mixed and sometimes with what might be or seem conflicting reasons to be fighting aginst the lab.

Stop Camden Bio Hazard and Animal Lab is a community campaign. Having said that I will point out that local people feel very strongly about the lab.

As for the Oxford Lab...it got built. This one won't be if we do it right.

I have nothing against anyone else campaigning as long as it is made clear that seperate groups are exactly that...part of a COALITION of different groups, campaigns and individuals who may or may not support each other but are all against the lab. Sometimes groups might not agree with how to do things / present themselves so clear distinctions should be made that the groups are seperate which I think is fair enough and best for everyone involved.

As for conspiracy theories....anyone who does not believe that the pharmaceutical industry / MI5 do not send in infiltrators / form whole groups needs to wake up. Some of these groups will have a set agenda to antagonise / disrupt / incite / goad etc and yes you're right I should ignore them where possible but if I suspect that someone is doing this I will draw a definate distinction between the community campaign and these others. I suggest that people read The Enemy Within by Seamus Milne or familiarise themselves with McLibel.

The community of Camden wants to keep this a locally based / run campaign and that is for the best...we live here after all and this is a very diverse area so there will be some diverse campaigns / groups / individuals doing their thing against the lab...expect this...this is Camden after all!

i don't like camden

05.07.2009 22:24

I used to help on animal rights stalls in London, everytime have done any sort of campaigning work in Camden it was full of vain apathetic types with designer dreadlocks, designer 'world peace' tshirts and far too concerned with their new piercing and overall image and doing whats 'in' or they were too stoned to be much bothered about trying to actually change the world, the sketch on the League of Gentlement with the charachter "Tish" is so spot on! I used to get much more of a positive response from 'consumers' who were busy 'consuming' in areas such as Oxford Street and Tottenham Court Road, we used to chuckle to ourselves "got the hair but doesn't care" - that said, i do hope people there and people further afield do all they can to stop this horrid place but it just goes to show that you can't judge a book by its cover!!!!

oooh

I THINK WE SHOULD ALL LISTEN TO MANDY AND STAY AWAY

Translation: "THIS IS A LOCAL CAMPAIGN FOR LOCAL PEOPLE - THERE'S NOTHING FOR YOU HERE!!!!!!"

The Camden Sanity Brigade = SHACWatch = HLS / police and MI5

06.07.2009 22:33

The people behind The Camden Sanity Brigade are the same people who are behind SHACWatch.

SHACWatch is a notorious web blog which gets most of it's information from Ole Bill and HLS.

The Camden Sanity Brigade are the same people.

Qoutes from people involved in The Camden Sanity Brigade:

"We are going to raise some money to sort you out".

"We are going to raise some money to give you some comeback".

"You are going to get payback for all the violence you have dished out".

This was said to members of a peaceful, legal, community based campaign run by residents who are against the building of the Camden Lab, mainly on health and safety grounds. We are curoius as to the attitude of these people.

The Camden Sanity Brigade leaflets are clearly designed as a smear and a frame up. This comes after the "Charity Watch" blog whcih was removed after complaints by the Camden Community campaign Stop Camden Bio Hazard and Animal Lab complained.

The members of the residents campaign have also been threatened and asked for protection money by a member of the Camden Sanity Brigade.

Now we know that the pharmaceutical industry has some unscrupulous people among them [Pfizer were sued for illegal experiments on human beings] but this is going to a whole new low and these people need stopping and they need stopping NOW.

I'm sure that the majority of law abiding individuals who work for the pharmaceutical industry would be horrified at the thretas and illegal actions carried out by thse people on their "behalf". At least one resident has nearly been driven to a breakdown by the disgusting behaviour of these people. The family of one resident complained to the police who took no notice and even laughed at one point. If you really want to drive people to extremism....this is how it could be achieved.

The people behind SHACWatch / Camden Sanity Brigade are extremists...working for HLS.
