Catholic Workers Arrested at DSEi Arms Fair for Pouring Red Paint

London Catholic Worker | 09.09.2009 14:07 | Anti-militarism | Terror War

Wednesday 9th September 2009 DSEi (1) Arms Fair, ExCEL Centre, Docklands, London.
London Catholic Workers Katrina Alton and Martin Newell poured red paint on to a sign advertising the DSEi Arms Fair [this morning at 8.30am]. The red paint represents the blood of the victims of the arms fair, on [the walkway which is the main pedestrian entrance to the arms fair by Custom House DLR station].

The two raised a banner which read “FORGIVE THEM FATHER; THEY KNOW NOT WHAT THEY DO”. They remained there kneeling in prayer for 45 minutes while several Arms Dealers took photos and one spoke with Fr. Martin. The two were surrounded by a dozen police officers and arrested for criminal damage, they were taken to a local police station.

Katrina Alton said, “Today the DSEi Arms Fair is proudly trading in arms and weapons that cause death and suffering to millions of the poorest and most vulnerable in our world. As a Christian I believe these children, women, and men are my brothers and sisters. Their voices are silent and their stories are not writ large on advertising stands or at multi billion pound ‘Fairs’: they remain hidden, “out of sight out of mind”. My love and compassion for these victims, faith, means that in faith and solidarity I cannot remain silent or hidden. So our action today is a visible sign that in the heart of our community this week the powerful and the greedy are trading in the blood of the poor: and that blood is on my hands too.
By pouring ‘blood’ over the DSEi sign I am hoping to bring out into the light what is happening here today, and challenge these powerful and rich people to think what a difference could be made right now if all this money and resources was used to feed the hungry, shelter the homeless, and care for the sick just as Jesus asks us to do.

Martin Newell said, “This red paint, our actions today, are for the victims. The victims of the arms trade may not know where their suffering has come from – they may only know that their families have been killed, their homes destroyed, their means of survival wiped out. They may not know the words DSEi, EXCEL, arms fair, arms trade, or capitalism. But those who are working here today, those who work in and for the arms trade, do know that they make a living at the expense of the blood of the innocent. We hope and pray that our action here today will touch those hardened hearts, and open the eyes of those who see but do not perceive, so that hearts of stone will be changed into hearts of flesh. We expect to pay a price for our convictions and our conscientious objection to this arms fair. But I pray that this too will be a small part of my journey to seeing the truth from the perspective of the victims.”

The London Catholic Worker is a part of the international, radical, pacifist, Catholic Worker movement. We offer hospitality and welcome to the poor and homeless, refugees and other migrants. At the same
time we resist the forces of injustice and violence that create so much suffering, poverty and insecurity.

Katrina Alton and Martin Newell are members of the London Catholic Worker (LCW). They live and work in the LCW house of hospitality for refugees in Hackney. They also work in the LCW drop-in and community café. Katrina Alton is 42 years old. Martin Newell is also 42.

NOTES: 1 – DSEi – Defence Services Export International – is the second largest arms fair in the world. It is organised by Clarion Exhibitions as contractors on behalf of the Trade and Industry Department of the UK Government (UKTI) . There were more demonstrations at the UKTI offices in central London on Tuesday. Arms firms and buyers for governments from all around the world come to DSEi to do business.

Was it the blood of Christ?

Maybe next time a huge condom can be blown up to highlight the miliions affected by AIDS as a result of more bad decisions from the Hitler Youth Pope.

Hypocrites

And, let's face it, Catholics know all about having blood on their hands.

Please don't make snap judgements

Dear friends,

I appreciate there is much wrong with the Catholic Church, but many of us disagree with official teachings on contraception. And whilst the Church does have a bloody history, recent Popes have been very clear about the duty of Catholics to work for peace and justice.

Please don't assume that just because someone is a Catholic their take on life is any different to yours. And please note that here are two very good people who have been willing to be arrested, and face possible fines/prison in order to protest against the arms trade. That is what this post is about and what you should be focussing on.

Yours in peace

Virginia

Great Action!

I'm really glad to see Christians caring about stuff! Often it seems anything radical is off limits to them but Jesus was a radical so good on you! We need to see more Christians like you.

To the people criticizing piss off! How the hell is it these peoples fault what the Catholic Church Trademark Corporation does. If it was Muslims people were generalising about it would be wrong and it's the same with other faiths.

ARA

Good job, Katrina and Martin

09.09.2009 21:28

...and fine statements. Looking forward to seeing the snaps taken by the arms dealers!

Firstly you need to know what youre talking about, I have nothing against Muslims or Christians as they are victims, I do however have a problem with Islam and Christianity. The word 'faith' quite literally means 'belief without evidence' and thats the beginning of where things go very wrong.

As for 'Catholic Church Trademark Corporation', if they believed it was wrong then why call yourself a 'Catholic'? I mean, would you call youself a Nazi if you didnt believe in national socialism? Indeed, if Islam, Christianity or Judaism were political parties or even private membership clubs, they'd have no members as everyone would have resigned in disgust.

I don't have a problem with your issue with religion, although people should be free to believe what they want even if it's totally illogical as long as they don't use it to harm others. But bringing up stuff that's going to be insulting two good activists that have just been nicked for taking action against the arms trade is out of line. There are ways of saying thing and places to say them.

Are you going to bring up suicide bombers on posts about Muslim youth opposing the EDL?

ARA

ARA still missing the point

10.09.2009 07:20

"people should be free to believe what they want even if it's totally illogical as long as they don't use it to harm others" - absolutely correct, except that the problem is religion has been used to harm, control and oppress millions of people.

For centuries people have been threatened with burning for all eternity in a hell that no-one can prove exists if they dont do as the church says, to me that is not only offensive and intolerant but it also ruins the credibility of anything carried out in the name of Christianity.

As for Muslim Youth vs EDL - I'd stay away from that as I believe both sides to be completely and utterly misguided.

What is so special about Muslims?

AH

Yo

10.09.2009 09:49

Folks,

Ya like Trots at a public meeting. You've done your kneejerk intervention and taken the thread off the arms trade and direct action.

The Catholic Worker has been around over 70 years combining solidarity with the homeless and militant nonviolent direct action against the war machine. Just do some of your own googling and self education on them rather than displaying your ignorance on this thread.

In the meantime congratulations and solidarity to Martin and Katrina and all other folks resisting this arms fair

"As for Muslim Youth vs EDL - I'd stay away from that as I believe both sides to be completely and utterly misguided."

So you wouldn't get involved because both sides are misguided? Then why don't you apply the same here? I suppose you think these two direct action activists are more 'misguided' than the arms dealers.

time to confess, not deny

10.09.2009 15:16

What's with all the DENIAL. The catholic church is responsible for heinas crimes against humanity. The pope recently went on alittle tour of the world apologising for thousands of reported sex crimes and brutality against children, Ireland,Boston,Australia etc.Wasn't it your christ who mentioned millstones, necks and the sea (mathew 18) The drama at the protest was nothing more than a self deluding ego trip. If your christ was here today your pope, bishops, priests and nuns would be the first up against the wall. Wake up, inform yourselves and leave that corupt institution, it has damaged you. Harm a child, feel the wrath of christ.(your words not mine)

Who mentioned guilt?

Come on...

10.09.2009 19:25

...I'm an atheist, anarchist and certainly not impressed by the Catholic Church but give these guys a break...Great action and we need more of them! When someone (as it turned out a Christian activist) had graffitied the QE2 centre in the early morning before the ITT conference in Monday it certainly cheered arriving protesters up. The fact that it was a christian doing it did not change the action.

Surely an anarchist would not want to dictate people's thoughts...

For ARA - the difference

10.09.2009 19:26

Arms dealers aren't misguided, they enable mass killing, they know it and so does everyone else. Its just they choose money over their conscience. Opposing arms dealers is all fine and good but when its done in the name of Christianity its hypocritical. Its a bit like a chronic racist denouncing homophobia.

Muslim Youth vs EDL is just petty mindless street violence that solves nothing - choosing their 'conscience' over intelligence and fact.

Antichrist

Great work at DSEI,

10.09.2009 19:26

Great work at DSEI, Big respcet to the 2 involved.

I'm an atheist but leave Catholic Worker alone they are bang on it. In Ireland the catholic worker lot were responsible for 2 million dollars worth of damge to an american war plane and won in court. They got a good thing going and everyone should be allowed religous freedom.

if your an anarchist you should believe in LIBERTY.

if your a Communist you may as well be a Nazi in my book for wanting to over control things

11.09.2009 14:04

What bit of 'child abuse' don't you get? Don't be an apologist for the catholic church. By all means protest against the arms industry but then don't go on to publicise an organisation that has systematically destroyed more peoples lives than the modern day arms industry and is still doing so. Educate and inform yourselves or else become a puppet of a patriarchal abuse machine.
