Sheffield Anarchist Bookfair — 22nd May 2010

Sheffield Bookfair | 12.05.2010 22:19 | Analysis | Culture | Sheffield

Booked for the 22nd May in our lovely city is Sheffield's first ever Anarchist bookfair. If you're anarcho-curious come and meet some local Anarchists. The Greens have conferences, the Left have meetings, the Conservatives have tea parties. So what do anarchists have? Bookfairs?!

These events have run for years in cities from San Francisco to Zagreb. They're a great starting point into the ideas, activism, ethics, creativity and history of the contemporary anarchist movement, with publishers comix, zines, film, art, food and fun stuff. It's at Corporation, appropriately painted black for the event, no doubt with a buzzing after-party nearby.

Read on for the days programme of meetings and see the web site for the bookfair.

  5. 14:30 - 15:25 — Communism From Below
  6. 18:00 - 19:00 — Yorkshire Anarchists Co-ordination Meeting
  7. 7pm — After-Bookfair Social

10:30 - 11:25 — An Activist Guide to the Web

Sheffield Indymedia

A talk exploring the potential advantages (and dangers) of new technologies to political activists.

11:30 - 12:25 — What is a Social Centre?

Sheffield Social Centre Collective

The UK is host to a growing network of anti-capitalist social centres. Organised along non-hierarchical lines, these spaces are a hub of community activity, political activism, education, self-help and self-organisation. Come find out about the history of the social centre project in Sheffield, the short-lived (but successful!) squatted centre at Pisgah House and future plans to establish a permanent, radical space in the city.

12:30 - 13:25 — Tracking Corporate Complicity in the Occupation of Palestine

Corporate Watch

There is an established and growing movement in solidarity with Palestine. Since 2004, the focus of this movement has been a Palestinian call for ‘Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions’ (BDS). The call was made by hundreds of Palestinian civil society organisations and all major Palestinian trade unions. Campaigners around the world have engaged in diverse forms of solidarity action in line with this call. Corporate Watch’s research intends to strengthen and provide a resource for the growing BDS movement and the wider international solidarity movement.

13:30 - 14:25 — Anarchism 101 (panel discussion)

"Everything you wanted to know about anarchism" with representatives of some of the different anarchist groups and organisations present.

14:30 - 15:25 — Communism From Below

The Commune

Come find out about the true vision of a communist society as achieved "from below". The Commune rejects statist and authoritarian visions of socialism and look instead to the tradition of ‘socialism from below’, which believes that emancipation can be achieved only through the activity, self-organisation and mobilisation of the working class and oppressed people themselves.

18:00 - 19:00 — Yorkshire Anarchists Co-ordination Meeting

Yorkshire Anarchist Group

To be held at the Red Deer pub, Pitt Street (off mappin st, off west st.) S1 4DD

Are you an anarchist in the Yorkshire area? Are you interested in getting more involved in anarchist activity? Come to an open planning meeting to discuss better co-ordination of the anarchist groups, federations, networks and individuals currently operating in the Yorkshire area.

7pm — After-Bookfair Social

Entry £1 (suggested donation)

After a day of fervent book buying come relax with some skalicious tunes and a few revolutionary anthems thrown in for good measure.

Upstairs @ the Red Deer, Pitt Street (off Mappin St, off West St.) S1 4DD.
