As the majority of occupiers joined 20,000 university, FE and school students from across London on a demonstration in central London, a few SOAS students stayed behind to defend the occupation space. University management chose this moment to pursue their legal challenge.
The SOAS occupiers stressed their commitment to having a peaceful, civilised and safe protest and reiterated their willingness to talk to management . The occupiers want management to take concrete steps to support their campaign against government plans to cut funding for teaching and raise tuition fees. Management has so far refused all offers to negotiate.
The SOAS occupiers also sent their congratulations and support to the 18 other universities in occupation across the country and welcomed the tens of thousands of students out protesting yesterday up and down the country.
Occupier Hannah White said, ‘the events of today show that this issue is not going away. Our demands are reasonable and we intend to stay put until they are met. Spirits are high and we send our solidarity to all other occupations’
