Discussions + Films + Book Reading

10:30 - 11:30 Introduction to Anarchism

Everything you ever wanted to know about Anarchism, but were afraid to ask.

11:30 - 12:30 Libertarian Education

You don’t have to be an anarchist to agree that the factory-style education system used in the UK today is not working for the working class. How would children be educated in a libertarian communist society? This talk will touch briefly on libertarian schools in the UK such as the famous Summerhill, Francisco Ferrer’s anarchist Escuela Moderna in Spain, the Modern School experiments in the US, and various other alternative education systems including the Montessori Method. With this food for thought, we will discuss our own ideas of an ideal education. Talk by Beth F.

13:30 – 15:00 Strategic organising in the Community and Workplace

This session will begin with an introduction to the Solidarity Federation’s Community and Workplace Strategies, followed by a quick Q&A. The discussion will then be broadened to include other ideas on organising in the future.

15:00 - 16:00 Racism

“The anarchist movement in the UK is opposed to racism and committed to destroy it as it is committed to destroy capitalism. Many anarchist groups, however, consist mainly of White people who are not targets of racism. If White anarchists are to play an effective part in fighting against the system of racism, we need to think and talk seriously about racism as a system. This means reading and listening to those who are experiencing the sharp end of this oppression. As a White anarchist, I have been working to educate myself, and in this discussion I will share some of the ideas that I have come across that seem particularly useful to anarchists. I will focus mainly on racism related to skin colour, drawing from readings of authors in the UK and the US. Oliver, who participated in the defence of Dale Farm, will then speak about the racism that Travellers experience in the UK.” Talk by Beth F.

16:30 - 17:30 Direct Action: Going Beyond the Question of Violence
Few debates within anarchism have been as heated as those concerning violence. Fewer still have been as unproductive and intransigent. This discussion hopes to reconceptualise the notion of violence in order to cut through some of the confusions and misconceptions, and thereby assist debates about appropriate, effective tactics. Talk by Ben Franks (author of “Rebel Alliances: The Means and Ends of Contemporary British Anarchisms”).

17:30 – 19.00 – The Pipe Film Screening
In a remote corner of the West of Ireland sits Broadhaven Bay. It is the perfect picture postcard, where the high cliffs of Erris Head and the Stags of Broadhaven stand sentry at the mouth of the bay against the mighty Atlantic, as if protecting the delicate golden sands of Glengad beach and the tiny village of Rossport, which nestles behind the dunes. However, this peaceful tranquility belies the turmoil that lies beneath, and the unique nature of the coastline which has sustained generations of farmers and fishermen, has also delivered to Shell Oil the perfect landfall for the Corrib Gas Pipeline.

19.00 - 20.00 Peace, Love and Petrol Bombs

Scottish author D.D. Johnston will be reading from his new book Peace, Love and Petrol Bombs, where he contrasts organising with McDonalds Workers Resistance with the anti-Summit movement.

20.00 – 10.00 Film Screening ‘Made In Dagenham’
