boomsatsuma presents Mother Foucault at new underground art venue in Bristol

boomsatsuma presents | 29.02.2016 11:17 | Culture | Gender

In Bristol lays an undiscovered treasure. Unseen for almost 50 years, the ash pits below Bristol Temple Meads station lead you to the former Working Men’s Club (closed over a decade ago, it’s a space befitting a Shane Meadows film). In this atmospheric venue known as The Loco Klub, boomsatsuma – a company fuelling the next generation of creative professionals – will present a series of rare and intimate events.

On Thursday 24 March poet and spoken word artist Joelle Taylor brings Mother Foucault to Bristol for the first time: a night of intellectual uprising, powerful poetry and furious dance.

Her guests create a line up of some of the best female spoken word artists in the country and up and coming female DJ - Antonia…..providing the after show…….

Sabrina Mahfouz
British Egyptian playwright and poet
Her creative work has been recognized with a number of awards including a 2014 Fringe First Award; the 2013 Sky Arts Futures Fund Award; an Old Vic New Voices Underbelly Edinburgh Award; a UK Young Artists Award; The Stage Award for Best Solo Performance 2011 nomination; an Old Vic New Voices TS Eliot Award and a Westminster Prize for New Playwrights.
Her recent solo show Chef won widespread critical acclaim at the Edinburgh Fringe 2014 and won a Fringe First. It transferred to the Soho Theatre in June 2015.

Salena Godden
The indefinable black, punk, feminist poet, writer and performer
Salena Godden has been variously described as 'doyenne of the spoken word scene' (Ian McMillan, Radio 3, The Verb), 'The Mae West madam of the salon' (The Sunday Times) and 'Everything the Daily Mail is terrified of' (Kerrang! Magazine

Vanessa KIsuule

Vanessa was a winner of SLAMbassadors UK 2010, performing on stage alongside Linton Kwesi Johnson at the Drill Hall. Her clever, complex and cutting style makes her a favourite of the UK scene, and she has performed at several festivals including Glastonbury, BrizzleFest and Larmer Tree. She has won Poetry Rivals slam and two Farrago slams and performed at leading poetry night Bang Said the Gun.

And of course Joelle Taylor herself
Joelle Taylor is a professional spoken word artist, published poet and playwright, as well as the founder and Artistic Director of SLAMbassadors UK, the national youth slam championships administered by the Poetry Society.

She's performed nationally and internationally for the British Council, touring both Zimbabwe and Botswana, and has performed at a diverse range of high profile venues including the Royal Festival Hall, Ronnie Scott’s, Buckingham Palace, the 02 arena, Glastonbury Festival, the 100 Club and Trafalgar Square amongst many others.
Joelle also hosts National Poetry Day Live at the Royal Festival Hall each year and have worked alongside poets like Benjamin Zephaniah, Hollie McNish, Linton Kwesi Johnson, Simon Armitage and Carol Ann Duffy.
