Defend Jerry Hicks

Nick Savage | 09.08.2005 19:02 | Social Struggles | Cambridge

Amicus have set up a public meeting on Thursday to support Jerry Hicks, sacked convenor at the Rolls Royce Bristol plant.

Jerry Hicks, an Amicus convenor at the Rolls Royce plant in Bristol, was sacked on 20th July. The charge against him was that he had organised unofficial strike action to defend two of his members from dismissal.

Jerry has worked for Rolls Royce for 30 years. He has been an elected steward for 20 years, and elected convenor for the Test area of the Bristol plant for the past 15 years. For the last three years he has been the deputy chair of the Confederated Site Committee.

When Jerry was first suspended, prior to dismissal, union members at the plant walked out on strike in protest. When Jerry was subsequently dismissed, union members again walked out in protest.

An interim hearing of an Employment Tribunal last Friday (5th August) found that Jerry was “probably dismissed on trade union grounds” and recommended that he be re-instated. But Rolls Royce has refused to follow the Tribunal’s recommendation.

Union members in the Test area of the plant are now being balloted by Amicus on strike action. The ballot runs from 3rd to 11th April. Amicus has condemned Jerry’s dismissal as an attack on him because of his work as a union official.

The Amicus Cambridge Central branch, which represents workers employed by Marshall Aerospace, has organised a meeting with Jerry so that local trade unionists can find out more about the victimisation of Jerry, and the campaign to secure his re-instatement. The meeting is supported by Cambridge and District Trades Union Council.

RE-INSTATE JERRY HICKS!

(AMICUS CONVENOR, R-R, BRISTOL)
