It's not racist to want to use spray paint

noborders | 24.03.2005 16:55 | Migration | Sheffield

It IS racist to impose limits to immigration. Limits and laws have a history of racism and this campaign is racist.

Sorry - but we spotted it.

Actually, it all depends

24.03.2005 19:10

Opposition to immigration may or may not be RACIST. That would depend upon whether the proposed immigrants are of a different race.

Racism isn't the only objectionable reason for opposing immigration. Humans are unfortunately quite capable of hating each other even when of the same race. The differences may be religious (sectarian hatred), cultural (ethnic hatred), even memory of historical conflict (like a civil wars a hundred years in the past). Reasons for opposing immigration don't even have to based upon hatred for the immigrants, just normal human greed and the unwillingess to share what we have with those who have less.

So it's true that opposition to immigration isn't NECESSARILY "racist".

The real question is whether or not it is the reason in THIS case, whether opposiiton to immigration in early 21st century Britain is about "rece". The way to answer a question like that is to examine the facts, see whether attitudes toward immigrants of the same race are significan;ty different from attitudes toward immigrants of different races.

do you forget Bev Hughes?

24.03.2005 22:28

she took the fall when the government was caught waiving people into the uk.

people were turning up with their papers and immigration documents.. but the officials said

"let them in without checks"

then months later started shouting that

"there are too many illegal immigrants!"

ha! caught you out... you sacks of sh1t

this new legislation is too implement even more racist policies in the UK.

the whole thing has been set up from start to finish..

demonize immigrants and asylum seekers, say there is a problem, wait for the public outcry and then offer racist solutions.

and the money wasted by government and councils every week on non-sense schemes which then inturn is used as a basis for claiming immigrants and aslyum seekers are too blame for the lack of cash in public services....

ITS ALL LIES

for your clarification... check out post on here about NATIONAL RAIL and the government underwriting then for 20bn pounds and now the government claim they are 20+ bn pounds short...
its soo obvious..
give money to private companies, proliferate the money.. then say that public services are running low on cash,,, the tories and bnp claim its the immigrants fault... labour blame the workers.. the liberals .. hmm a bit of both

thinking what i'm thinking?

25.03.2005 00:22

Come on, it's NOT racist to try to stop immigration. Don't you know that detention centres around UK ports and airports are full of Americans, Auzies, and Kiwis who were all caught trying to come to this country of ours to steal our jobs working as childminders etc. What's more, custom and immigration are always catching on locking up rich white people (often politician and business men) from Africa so you can't claim that imigration policies are targetted at poor people of ethnic origin. The tory party is no more racist than new labour or Enoch Powel!

Yes but

25.03.2005 12:38

The ordinary voter will be put off by these "alterations". They don't identify with people who write swear words and graffiti. If anything it will create more support for the Tories IMHO.

Think on this!

25.03.2005 12:52

Why do we not restrict goods and food as well as people?
Close our ports to imports and see how long we would last!
Within 7 days we would run out of food.
Its simple people (so called illegals) are just following goods and food raped from their country.
Lets make poverty history and solve border issues.

English people, curious people

25.03.2005 13:31

Yes, it is racism to impose limits to emigration and it's curious how english people get out of their stinking island and went all over the world killing and stilling so many people in Africa, America, Asia, Australia and New Zeland, they conquer the world, but now they feel so recelous when people from the countrys they were exploting come here just with the pourpouse of work and improve their lives, rather than kill, conquer and still.
I call to all the people from the poor countrys to come over England and Europe to take back their part and to make them understand that they are so rich just because we are so poor, so lets destroy europe so they will know a bit of what the rest of the world is suffering because their richness!! I'm from europe eh? Fuck england!!!

a) the posters are meant to incite debate (ie they work, see above!)
b) the posters are not proclaiming the Conservative Party's view point but Labour's!!
please think before you graffeti!

Not paying attention, M?

27.03.2005 21:16

Although Labour are as guilty as the Cons of scaremongering, it is the Cons who want to impose immigration quotas.

"A Conservative Government will set an annual maximum limit on the number who can settle in Britain, including a quota for asylum seekers..."

Sometimes not racism but...

30.03.2005 00:43

...it is xenophobia at least. Fear of that which is somehow different to us, even if by accident of birthplace.

The most odious policy in the local Con leaflet is the idea that we can impose quotas for refugees (or "asylum seekers" as they call them). What!? Would a Conservative UK turn away people with "I'm sorry but you can't escape persecution until the next counting period as we're at quota already"???

I agree with some of the other comments. The immigrant concentration camps like Oakington seem pretty terrible and they exist under a Labor government.

Right on Graffiti

17.04.2005 12:29

Two points...
Firstly RE: Britain overcrowding, it is not. The population is actually falling at the moment due to a combination of a low birth rate typical of a European developed country and migration away from Britain. Yes, thats right...British immigrants...makes you think, perhaps if we could swap asylum seekers for Daily Mail readers ;)

Secondly RE: Right to graffiti tory posters. The way I see it the conservative party has the means to spread its message. You could argue that this relys upon dontations from self intrested businessmen, but this is irrelevant. What is relavant is that as the tory's have the means to spread their message, why shouldnt we have the means to spread ours? It is not that any of the graffti actually censors the tories message, it just offfers and alernative viewpoint.

Thoughts?

Right to defend

04.05.2005 14:46

re: Graffiti

Go for it! the main parties all have enough money to propagate their view points to the extent that we hear them so much and are echoed in the main stream media so often that it becomes a normal. People then forget that there could be other reasons or solutions to the problem. The only way most people ever get to hear about an alternative perspective is through illegal communication such as fly-posting and graffitt - you may say oh but there is indymedia, and yes for those that are clued up there is indymedia but if you are not clued up then you are stuck with main stream shit. However, because most of the illegal information normally comes out with passion rather than calculated thought can be really off putting and intimidating to the average person with the messages seeming like they have little reasoning behind them, often seeming really antagonistic and agressive. Still so many people think that it is only those who want to be rebels that contradict what the main stream are saying and this stereotype often get reinforced when profound insults are sprayed after such high profiled campaigns. I am all for people defacing two-faced pigs but I think the use of swearing is too much and doesn't actually help - oh dear I sound like an old lady. Sorry. what do you reckon though?

Ummm...u morons

08.05.2005 20:52

Firstly its ment to be ironic...that was the whole tory campain....secondly more people leave the british isles per year for the past 10 than people enter it...people just think that if we let everyone in then there going to leech of us..most are fleeing war and famin to try and live an honest life...if britain was invaded we would run to other countries and expect instant asylem and benifits...

Why is it racist?

07.06.2005 15:19

Im sorry but i cant quite understand why it is racist to impose an annual limit on how many people come here.
Yes i do feel sorry for the people who need asylum and i am very Sympathetic but it goes along the lines of how can we give if eventually we wont have anything to give.
i agree yes we did colonise half the world for the british empire etc etc but through that came a lot of benefits.
to say its racist wud be turning away ppl of 1 minority.
as if saying right we will let in all the kosovans but anyone who is black aint coming in.
THATS RACIST.
telling someone they cant come in because we have vast numbers ALREADY coming in isnt racist.
Maybe its true what the last comment said about the numbers coming in and leaving. but maybe it isnt.
how can you be so sure that this is. did you personally count everyone that came in and everyone that left the country?
i doubt that very much.

Dan

State spongers

05.08.2005 16:15

Out of all of you who say it is racist to impose limits on immigration how many of you are immigrants/ asylum seekers? I think you are expressing extremist left-wing views such as these so that you and your ilk can continue to exploit the UK's generous benefits system, cause houses to be constructed all over the tattered remnents of our countryside, and overwhelm our already inundated transport infrastructure.
I do not consider myself to be racist and firmly believe that carefully managed migration would be an asset to this country, but I sincerely doubt the motives of those who wish for it not be brought under control.

How is it fucking racist to impose limits on immigration you politcally correct, race card player. To allow no immigration would still not be racist either, Are you saying restricting people from abandoning their own countries to come and feed off another is racist? Why is it that only white majority countries are the only countries that allow immigration on mass, please answer that for me. Sort out the lower ends of this society first, the fact that one in 5 of every briton is in poverty. One more thing RESTRICTING IMMIGRATION means restricting ALL of those who try to come into this country, BLACK OR WHITE you fucking idiots. Go hug some trees and join Peta or something

listen to this

18.05.2006 03:10

Look i have to agree with peace. Bush is yapping alot saying "we don't know who is here"
"they are getting free education" " they don't pay taxes". well i bet u didn't know plenty of things im going to tell u, but the US has the power to import all illegal immigrants in days just daysl, but do u know why he doesn't do it because of $$$$. Another thing every body that works including illegal immigrants gets a check and in that check is takes away federal taxes, medicare, and social security so tell me what the heck do they do with the money that the illegal immigrants don't claim when they get old because they can't, they spend it on other things. social security is surviving because of them and only them. so instead of just talking about the bad things that illegal immigrants do they should be talking about the good things that they do for out country.

who is in the country?

06.09.2006 17:23

the goverment have no idea who is living here and even after the recent bomb attemts we are still waving immigrants though. the goverment need to consider the british citizens and ask how it is affecting them and ask themselves who is actually living in the country . why should they be able to come into the country and get free housing and healthcare when we are paying for it

Contradictory, stupid racists

23.10.2006 14:26

"the goverment have no idea who is living here and even after the recent bomb attemts we are still waving immigrants though"

Point of information: The bombers on 7/7 were British nationals.

It is obvious that tightening immigration laws is a racist policy. It is designed to stir up racist attitudes, like "those bloody illegals, stealing our jobs." There are a couple of important points to be made against this sort of view:
(1) It is the strict immigration laws that cause people to enter the black market, undercutting the amount of work offered to British citizens because employers can get it for cheaper from so-called "illegals".
(2) A more lax border policy, in conjunction with schemes for integrating immigrants into our culture would therefore lead to a reduction in the amount of cheap, unregulated labour that undercuts British employment.

Futhermore, the proposed solution - getting business leaders to decide on the basis of economic development how many people should be let in per year - is saying that peoples' life prospects should depend on how useful they are to private enterprise. Which is clearly bollocks to anyone with an ounce of humanity.

I'd also like to point out how stupidly contradictory the views of racists are. They say "they're just sponging off our economy, doing nothing to contribute themselves", at the same time as saying, "filthy illegals, stealing our jobs". Well, are they working or are they not? If they're doing jobs, they're contributing to the economy, so they aren't just sponging. If they're not, how can you claim they're stealing our jobs?

You could say that they don't contribute through tax, but the only reason they don't do that is if they are forced into illegal labour, and the only reason people are forced into illegal labour is BECAUSE of strict immigration laws.

Basically, tightening immigration has nothing to do with the economy: that is why business are on the whole FOR open borders (just read The Economist). It is a political issue, designed to stir up hatred of foreigners and win the xenophobic vote. And EVEN IF it was good for the economy to impose restrictions, peoples' lives are not measurable by how much labour they do: to say that is to put goods over people, which is truly immoral.
