translation | 27.06.2003 01:00 | Gender | Health | Repression | World

The ship from "Women on Waves" (WOW, polish: Kobiety na Falach), arrived the 22nd of june in the harbour of Wladyslawowo. Polish women organisations celebrated the arrival of the floating abortion clinic. Beforehand the landing of the ship was prevented by the authorities.
At the same time abortion enemies attacked the ship with eggs, bottles and stones. The authorities have searched the ship and sealed all drugs.

"Women on Waves"-
report from imc Germany, 26.06.2003
 http://germany.indymedia.org/2003/06/55996.shtml

The ship should have been stationed from the 20th of june to the 5th of july in the coastal city. Today, 26th of june, it was planned to leave back into international waters. The ship was fined 12000 polish zloty.

The strict anti-abortion law is in existence for 10 years now. Every year about 80 000 - 200000 illegal abortions are carried out in Poland. The ban is affecting particularly poor women, who can not afford the expensive procedure. Doctors and nurses are threatened with up to three years in prison. Less than 140 legal abortions were taking place in 2002 in Poland, it is expected it would be more than 180 000, if the procedure would be available in general.

The concept of the ship sailing under Dutch flag, is that there is a secure and legal alterantive for women on international waters.

Every 5 minutes a woman dies because of an illegal, unsecure abortion in this world.

The ship with its mobile abortion clinic sails to countries in which abortions are prohibited, on invitation of the local women's organisations, e.g. Komitet Ster in Poland. So the abortions can be carried out professionally and medically securely. Thereby the women should be given the opportunity to take controll and use their rights self-determined.
