Court cases against people accused of taking part in militant actions against the 2001 Genoa G8 Summit begin tomorrow (Tues 2nd March 2004). Here's an article from a mainstream local newspaper in Genoa about the cases and the likelyhood of more arrests.

Genoa G8: More Court Cases to be Expected

The Genoa G8 court cases which begin on the 2nd March 2004 aren’t expected to be the last. People accused of destroying a school in Quarto, who took part in the ‘Volkstheatrekaravan’, who were arrested leaving the city, and who were arrested after having been identified in photgraphs or on videos are expected to be affected.

The following article is from ‘Secolo XIX’, a local newspaper in Genoa.

G8: MORE MILITANT ACTIVISTS TO BE TARGETTED
The struggles within the left concerning Genoa aren’t ending. Two representatives of the Re-founded Communist Party (‘Rifondazione Comunista’) are close to leaving the City Council, led by Pericu, whilst the judicial developments of the investigations are pouring even more oil on the polemical fire.

The request to begin the court cases against activists accused of destroying schools in the province is to be made soon. Rumours are emerging from within the corridors of the DIGOS (Italian Special Branch): All investigations into the events in Genoa in 2001 are to be considered complete. The results are being submitted to the judge now. Consequently, in the next few months, the police are to request the commencement of further proceedings against people who took part in the demonstrations. “There will be a second trial against those who took part in violence against the G8” explained the Prosecutor, Giancarlo Pellegrino. 50-60 activists are to be charged. A few of them, even though they haven’t yet been arrested, are facing the same charges as the 26 activists whose trials begin on 2nd March: ‘devastation’ (which carries a sentence of 8-15 years) and ‘looting’. Different groups are affected here: some were stopped by the police and Carabinieri when they were trying to leave the city after the two days of disturbances. Others belong to the ‘Volkstheaterkarawane’ (Popular Theatre Convoy). A few others have been identified from video footage and photographs. A few of the requests for proceedings to be initiated have already been made and are already lying in the desk drawers of the ‘procura’(?). There are a few reasons for this: Firstly, so as not to create more tension before the Court Cases on the 2nd March only one new case is to be initiated for now.

The Prosecution Service in Genoa have actually called for proceedings to commence against 5 people from the ‘Askatasuna’ social centre in Turin. They are accused of having destroyed a place in Quarto that had hospitably been made available to anti-G8 demonstrators arriving from outside. The place became a fortress for the most radical groups instead and was eventually destroyed. The Province decided not to co-prosecute in the trial on 2nd March. Instead, the new investigation is intended to reveal the stories of damage to structures, for which compensation has already been sought.

NOTE: IT WOULD BE GOOD TO TRANSFER THESE STORIES TO THE CENTRAL COLOMN AND TO TRY AND SOLICIT ARTICLES ABOUT THE TRIAL AND THE SURROUNDING REPRESSION.

Obviously, our solidarity is needed!
