Obama: Regime Rotation

27-01-2009 19:15 | Analysis | Terror War | Sheffield | World

The arrival of the Obama administration will not fundamentally alter the course of military expansion accelerated during the Bush era. The origins of these policies do not lie uniquely in neoconservative ideology. While the election of President Obama may offer new opportunities for progressive forces to delimit the damage, their space for movement will ultimately be constrained by deep-seated structural pressures that will attempt to exploit Obama to rehabilitate American imperial hegemony, rather than transform it.

Edit BBC and SkyTV to remain impartial on 'being humane'

26-01-2009 17:25 | Analysis | Palestine | World

The BBC’s Mike Fudge said “Some viewers think that when there is a major catastrophe, the BBC should help the Aid Agencies in their work to stop civilians suffering and dying – what we might call ‘being humane’.”

“But other viewers disagree, and think that babies with limbs torn off should go through lots and lots of pain, a nasty infection, and death – what we might call ‘being inhumane’ or ‘cruel’. It is not the BBC’s place to judge which of these positions is ‘right’ or ‘wrong’.”

He explained: “It is often difficult for news networks to strike a balance between humanity and cruelty. By telling the Aid Agencies to get lost, we ensure that everyone thinks we’re being fair.”

Maoist Leadership in Nepal Bans Strikes

25-01-2009 11:33 | Analysis | Social Struggles | Workers' Movements | World

As a strike wave sweeps the country, the Maoist leadership agrees to banning strikes.

Since the Maoists emerged in the April 2008 Nepal elections as the largest party (though without an absolute majority) to lead the new coalition government, they have failed to heal existing divisions - in their own party, within the parliamentary political system and its ruling class - or within the intermingled social, caste and ethnic tensions across the wider society. In fact, all these divides have widened. And since November a strike wave has spread across the country.

Energy War: NATO meddling in Sudan to block China

25-01-2009 09:32 | Analysis | Anti-militarism | Energy Crisis | World

The US is slowly shifting its military needs towards Africa and Sudan in particular. While the Barack Obama administration will force the UN to declare a no-fly zone over Darfur, the US forces in so called peacekeeping missions will establish their bases in Darfur or Kenya and other surrounding nations in order to keep Sudan under its umbrella.

Clearly, the NATO will be brought in to support the US in its 'conquest' mission and its global strategy of controlling the 'energy' reserves across the African continent.

Gaza – The Blood-Soaked U.S.-Israeli “Ceasefire”

24-01-2009 10:00 | Analysis | Anti-militarism | Palestine | World

The U.S.-Israeli “ceasefire” is an effort to continue to pursue these criminal aims. For one, there are reports that many Israeli troops will not immediately leave Gaza. Israeli military forces continue to surround Gaza, and Israel and Egypt continue to imprison the people of Gaza and control all access in an out. So the starvation of Gaza will probably intensify as a result of this “ceasefire.”

Black Reagan

20-01-2009 13:36 | Analysis | Globalisation | Repression | World

When Barack Obama started praising Ronald Reagan the candidate's apologists claimed he was just paying respect to a dead president. Now it's clear that Obama's affection for the raging old reactionary was heartfelt. With his latest pronouncements on cutting "entitlements," Obama "has proven himself to be a true believer in the Reagan revolution."

Israel in Gaza: Beyond Disproportionate

20-01-2009 00:12 | Analysis | Anti-militarism | Palestine | Sheffield | World

Marching amid the 50,000 protesters in London bearing witness against the Israeli offensive on Gaza, I spotted a hand-made placard inscribed with the words of the radical Brazilian educator Paolo Freire: “Washing one’s hands of the conflict between the powerful and the powerless means to side with the powerful, not to be neutral.”

Why Israel won't survive

19-01-2009 23:49 | Analysis | Anti-racism | Palestine | Sheffield | World

The merciless Israeli bombardment of Gaza has stopped -- for now -- but the death toll keeps rising as more bodies are pulled from carpet- bombed neighborhoods.

What Israel perpetrated in Gaza, starting at 11:30am on 27 December 2008, will remain forever engraved in history and memory. Tel al-Hawa, Hayy al-Zeitoun, Khuzaa and other sites of Israeli massacres will join a long mournful list that includes Deir Yasin, Qibya, Kufr Qasim, Sabra and Shatila, Qana, and Jenin.

Israel's Next War: Today the Gaza Strip, Tomorrow Lebanon?

19-01-2009 22:11 | Analysis | Anti-militarism | Palestine | World

The objective in Lebanon is "regime change" and to repress all forms of political opposition. But how to bring it about? The forecast of the 2009 general-elections in Lebanon does not look favourable for the March 14 Alliance. Without an internal political or armed option in Lebanon, which could result in the installation of a U.S.-sponsored "democracy," Washington and its indefictible Israeli ally have chosen the only avenue available: a military solution, another war on Lebanon.

Israeli War on the Gaza Strip: "The Birth Pangs of a New Palestine/Middle East"
