Anti cuts demo escapes police control in Oxford

A huge crowd, mostly students, mobilised at short notice to protest the visit of Vince Cable to Oxford, turned up in spite of the fact that he cancelled his visit, and briefly took over several busy areas of Oxford in the face of police attempts to contain us.

Over 1,000 people of Oxford gathered on the streets today to express their anger and refusal to accept the public sector cuts, in particular those to higher education. The gathering was made up of students, academics and citizens of Oxford.

After Vince Cable pulled out of talking in Oxford after hearing of a student demo against him today, the demo has gone ahead - and it's huge! I've just heard reports that there are 'over a thousand' people protesting, and that protestors have broken through police lines, and out on to Oxford high street.

Yesterday afternoon (Saturday 23rd October 2010), I witnessed history repeating itself, as in response to Tories doing what they always do when they're in power, hundreds of Cambridge people came out onto the streets in protest against the forthcoming proposed cutbacks in funding to the public sector and welfare.
