Government Criticised Over ID Card Secrecy

04-08-2006 10:56

Local politicians and security experts have joined an influential
parliamentary committee in criticising the government for keeping the
public in the dark over identity cards.

The House of Commons Science and Technology Committee report, published
today, says government ID card plans are "inconsistent" and "lack clarity",
and raps ministers' knuckles for attacking the credibility of academics
commenting on the scheme.

Orwellian Eye-in-the-Sky Gets Orwellian Fanfare in Liverpool Echo

03-08-2006 20:35

Cops unveil their new cameras
In a breathtakingly cynical strategy, Merseyside Police have linked their purchase of eye-in-the-sky camera technology with this week's 'moral panic' - mini-motos. In a breathtakingly credulous piece of 'journalism', the Liverpool Echo's Luke Traynor has bought their story hook, line and sinker.

Doomsday Global Warming: Fact-Sheet / What To Do?

03-08-2006 16:00

Drastic and tragic Climate Change is well underway, and will worsen unto Doomsday if we do not take drastic measures to stop its progress. Energy conservation is at best stopgap. The development of Green (clean, renewable, cheap) energy sources is indispensable. This has never been a particularly difficult technical problem. The Problem has been primarily political, necessitating a crucial political change --- Polluters' Power overridden by People's Power.

Mind the Gap... world energy crisis approaches, dire consequences for planet

31-07-2006 11:47

Last year, for the first time since 1992, the UK became a net importer of crude oil as a result of terminal decline of the North Sea oil and gas fields. The British government doesn't appear to worried yet and apparently thinks the country can simply buy the energy it needs so quite some time to come. "The government consider that the world's oil resources are sufficient to prevent global total oil production peaking before 2030," said energy minister Malcolm Wicks earlier this month. Wicks said that the Government are already putting in place policies that will "help ease the UK economy away from power supplied primarily through fossil fuels" - probably a reference to the recent energy review and the U turn on nuclear power.

Tip for climbing fences

28-07-2006 21:18

the pocket ladder
Many activists get arrested cutting through military fences and so get the extra charge of 'malicious mischief'. Using a ladder to climb fences is impracticable as you tend to get intercepted and charged for approaching a base with a ladder. You can buy 'telescopic-ladders' but they are very expensive so here is the cheapo solution.

Review of New Indymedia Film, "i"

25-07-2006 16:39

i

"i,” the powerful and occasionally frustrating new film by independent directors Raphael Lyon and Andres Ingoglia, tells of one such democratic moment, the Argentinean economic collapse of 2001 and the social uprisings that accompanied it. Along the way it also functions as one of the first, if not the very first, feature length films about the Independent Media Center (IMC, or Indymedia) movement, which chronicled the Argentine struggle as it unfolded.

Anyway. Here's an advance review of the Indymedia film "i" that I did for the upcoming issue of the Indypendent.

Minutes of Manchester NO2ID Meeting, Tuesday 18th July

25-07-2006 00:21

Manchester NO2ID Logo
On Tuesday, Manchester NO2ID had another productive meeting at the Town Hall Tavern. We were joined by several new faces as a result of our flyering campaigns, as well as many of our regular supporters.

We discussed our progress since our last meeting. Since then, we have had our first Manchester Day of ID Register Opposition, and started our fortnightly evening flyering campaign. We've seen more people subscribing to our e-mail list and attending our meetings, as well as stopping to ask us about the National Identity Register. This is the kind of awareness raising which we really need to do, and we seem to be doing pretty weill at it.

The question of when global production of oil will reach it's maximum and start begin it's inevitable decline has not been the only question being asked at the 5th International Workshop on Oil and Gas Depletion which has been taking place is Italy this week. Amoung the doom and gloom inplicit the facts and conclusions being presented, there also appears to be scope for hope and optimism.

Solidarity With Swedish and German Workers

17-07-2006 12:35

Sweden's first wagedumpingsite has been launched. With the german page
jobdumping.de as a rolemodel Vashal Nindal, Aleksandar Goga, Valdemar Vogel and Jeffrey Singh have started the site jobbjakt (workhunting or jobhunting). jobbjakt.se´s motto is that the person who accepts the lowest salary gets the job.

Workers register themselves free of charge on the homepage, and are then
supposed to lay bids on the avalible jobs, the lower the "better". This
tasteless auction obviously reduces salaries in general, as collective wages agreements are undermined and the workers are forced to commit treason against their comrades.
