Foie Gras Removed From Two Restaurants In One Day

Foie Gras Free Brum | 04.07.2008 19:55 | Animal Liberation | Birmingham

The Bucklemaker & Turners restaurant remove fois gras.Making it the 7th and 8th Birmingham restaurants to follow suit.

Turners:

After a short (and 1st) demo at Turners restaurant they decided, after a chat with activists,to remove foie gras from their menu. The chefs through the demo were verbally threatening and,as expected, called the police for "help". Realising what a nusiance it would be to have the truth right outside their restaurant door. The chef himself erased foie gras from their outside menu display, as we continued the demo, till he stated he wud never sell foie gras again.

The Bucklemaker:

Straight after the demo outside of Turners,we headed to the Bucklemaker. And to our surprise the chef was waiting, and heard of the success at Turners, and vowed never to sell foie gras again. This after only two demonstrations outside of their establishment.

Hypocrisy

This is a great cause of which I wholeheartedly support but what I find odd is that apparently some of the campaigners feel it wrong for this obscene/cruel practice to continue, however, are quite happy to go home and scoff a beef steak or feed their faces with McDonalds. Are they simply just using this bandwagon to ease their conscience? Can someone explain this to me please?

It is good that you are supportive of our cause. However the comment that you made is very unfounded; activists who work within our group are generally vegan-- People who work hard to end animal exploitation where they see it.

If we were to have a meat eater within our group then it would be a learning step for them; to work with animal rights campaigners and to see that being vegatarian or vegan isn't just about eating vegtables and claiming to be ethical. We would not feel comfortable working with someone who is supportive of McDonals not just from an animal rights perspective but also from a political.

Sometimes people become interested in campaigns like this (even meat eaters) because they see cruelty and because they realise that if the government has banned it then it must be a horrendous practice to be supportive of-- This then incites them to think about what else they are eating and how they can make a difference. We don't currently have any meat eaters attending demonstrations but if they did i wouldn't class it as bandwagon jumping.

Our group welcomes anyone (except fascists)-- We do not discriminate against anyone willing to make a difference for the better.
