The press dispatches bring the news; it belongs to the Astute Class, the first of its kind to be constructed in Great Britain in more than two decades.
"A nuclear reactor will allow it to navigate without refuelling during its 25 year of service. Since it makes its own oxigen and drinking water, it can circumnavigate the globe without needing to surface," was the statement to the BBC by Nigel Ward, head of the shipyards.
"It’s a mean looking beast", says another.
"Looming above us is a construction shed 12 storeys high. Within it are 3 nuclear-powered submarines at different stages of construction," assures yet another.
Someone says that "it can observe the movements of cruisers in New York Harbor right from the English Channel, drawing close to the coast without being detected and listen to conversations on cell phones". "In addition, it can transport special troops in mini-subs that, at the same time, will be able to fire lethal Tomahawk missiles for distances of 1,400 miles", a fourth person declares.
El Mercurio, the Chilean newspaper, emphatically spreads the news.
The UK Royal Navy declares that it will be one of the most advanced in the world. The first of them will be launched on June 8 and will go into service in January of 2009.
It can transport up to 38 Tomahawk cruise missiles and Spearfish torpedoes, capable of destroying a large warship. It will possess a permanent crew of 98 sailors who will even be able to watch movies on giant plasma screens.
The new Astute will carry the latest generation of Block 4 Tomahawk torpedoes which can be reprogrammed in flight. It will be the first one not having a system of conventional periscopes and, instead, will be using fibre optics, infrared waves and thermal imaging.
"BAE Systems, the armaments manufacturer, will build two other submarines of the same class," AP reported. The total cost of the three submarines, according to calculations that will certainly be below the mark, is 7.5 billion dollars.
What a feat for the British! The intelligent and tenacious people of that nation will surely not feel any sense of pride. What is most amazing is that with such an amount of money, 75 thousand doctors could be trained to care for 150 million people, assuming that the cost of training a doctor would be one-third of what it costs in the United States. You could build 3 thousand polyclinics, outfitted with sophisticated equipment, ten times what our country possesses.
Cuba is currently training thousands of young people from other countries as medical doctors.
In any remote African village, a Cuban doctor can impart medical knowledge to any youth from the village or from the surrounding municipality who has the equivalent of a grade twelve education, using videos and computers energized by a small solar panel; the youth does not even have to leave his hometown, nor does he need to be contaminated with the consumer habits of a large city.
The important thing is the patients who are suffering from malaria or any other of the typical and unmistakable diseases that the student will be seeing together the doctor.
The method has been tested with surprising results. The knowledge and practical experience accumulated for years have no possible comparison.
The non-lucrative practice of medicine is capable of winning over all noble hearts.
Since the beginning of the Revolution, Cuba has been engaged in training doctors, teachers and other professionals; with a population of less than 12 million inhabitants, today we have more Comprehensive General Medicine specialists than all the doctors in sub-Saharan Africa where the population exceeds 700 million people.
We must bow our heads in awe after reading the news about the English submarine. It teaches us, among other things, about the sophisticated weapons that are needed to maintain the untenable order developed by the United States imperial system.
We cannot forget that for centuries, and until recently, England was called the Queen of the Seas. Today, what remains of that privileged position is merely a fraction of the hegemonic power of her ally and leader, the United States.
Churchill said: Sink the Bismarck! Today Blair says: Sink whatever remains of Great Britain’s prestige!
For that purpose, or for the holocaust of the species, is what his "marvellous submarine" will be good for.

CUBA mantiene relaciones de cooperación con 155 países y más de 42 mil de sus profesionales y técnicos prestan servicios en 102 naciones , informó Yiliam Jiménez, viceministro de Relaciones Exteriores de Cuba
La Viceministra, encargada de la cooperación internacional en la Cancillería, informó que más de 30 mil médicos y técnicos de la salud trabajan en 71 países de América Latina, el Caribe y África.
Con la ayuda cubana se ha prestado servicios médicos a más de 300 millones de personas y realizado dos millones de intervenciones quirúrgicas. A lo que hay que añadir la vacunación de 9 millones de niños.
La presencia médica no se ha reducido exclusivamente al campo de la asistencia, si no también a la transferencia de tecnología.
En tal sentido se refirió a que mediante el programa de la Operación Milagro, se operaron con equipos de alta tecnología a más de 600 mil pacientes de 30 países de América Latina, El Caribe y ahora más recientemente de África .
Expresó la funcionaria que se han instalado más de 30 centros oftalmológicos en 8 naciones de América Latina y el Caribe.
Sobre la ayuda a la alfabetización sostuvo que actualmente Cuba trabaja
en 25 países con el programa “Yo sí puedo”.
También explicó que se está apoyando en materia de ahorro energético a países de la región.
”En el marco de la Alternativa Bolivariana para las Américas (ALBA) hay un importante programa de cooperación con Bolivia, Nicaragua, Venezuela y las naciones caribeñas”, precisó.
La viceministra recordó como hecho significativo que Cuba tiene constituido el Contingente Médico Henry Reeve, que posibilitó ayudar a otros países en momentos de catástrofes y epidemias. Más de 3 000 cooperantes del Contingente han prestado sus servicios en cuatro países y donado 34 hospitales de campañas equipados con tecnología de punta.
El Contingente surgió a raíz del azote del huracán Katrina y se ofreció como apoyo solidario al pueblo norteamericano para aliviar las consecuencias de la catástrofe, lo que no fue aceptado por el gobierno estadounidense.
Sin embargo, otras naciones como Pakistán e Indonesia contaron con su presencia ante los violentos embates de la naturaleza que enfrentaron, hecho que fue altamente valorado por las autoridades de ambas naciones, señaló.
Refiriéndose a Haití informó que allí se encuentran ubicados 600 técnicos de la salud, de ellos 400 son médicos cubanos y unos 266 son jóvenes haitianos graduados en Cuba en la Escuela Latinoamérica de Medicina, ELAM.
A lo anterior hay que añadir que más de 600 jóvenes de esa nación caribeña estudian medicina en la Isla y otros 110 están matriculados en diferentes carreras.
La ayuda a la pequeña y empobrecida nación también abarca a la Industria Azucarera y a sectores de la agricultura. Significó que en momentos difíciles de gran tensión interna y enfrentamientos, los cubanos permanecieron en sus puestos prestando asistencia al pueblo haitiano. Ningún medico cubano fue agredido. Recordó que Venezuela en coordinación con Cuba está presente en esta misión.
En relación con China, informó que se mantiene una amplia cooperación médica , en la biotecnología y en la formación de recursos humanos. Calificó las relaciones con la gran nación asiática “como amplias e intensas” y señaló que la Isla recibirá a 500 jóvenes chinos para que estudien español.
“Las relaciones con China son estratégicas pues tiene que ver con el impulso de proyectos para el desarrollo económico y social de nuestro país”, dijo.
Sobre Venezuela señaló que la cooperación forma parte de un intercambio de bienes y servicios, teniendo en cuenta las asimetrías, lo que permite impulsar las economías, contar con estabilidad y contribuir al desarrollo social de ambos países. Recordó que 300 mil venezolanos han sido operado gracias a la Operación Milagro.
“Tenemos allí unos 12 mil médicos y 24 mil profesionales y técnicos de la salud . En Cuba estudian unos 5000 jóvenes venezolanos y otros 13 mil están superándose junto a las Brigadas médicas cubanas en Venezuela.”
La cooperación con Venezuela en bienes y servicios hace que los cubanos estén presentes en muchos sectores económicos y sociales. Valoró como un buen ejemplo que se hayan alfabetizado un millón de personas de esa nación.
Señaló que especialistas cubanos de la agricultura trabajan de conjunto con los venezolanos en el programa endógeno que el presidente Chávez ha querido estimular en sectores agrarios.
También se ha establecido el intercambio en materia de energía y de información lo que permite que Cuba pueda hacer mucho más eficiente la industria de extracción petrolera.
La Isla paga a precios preferenciales la factura petrolera a Venezuela, por debajo del costo en el mercado internacional, como lo hacen otros países de la región que son beneficiados, señaló.
Al ampliar su información sobre La Operación Milagro indico que se extendió a 14 países caribeños lo que posibilitó operar a más de 28 mil enfermos.
Consideró que este programa se hace mucho más integral al trasferirse tecnología para que se realicen las operaciones en otras naciones. Para ello ya se han instalado 34 centros oftalmológicos con la más alta tecnología en 8 países.
Cuba ha tenido un papel importante en el desarrollo de este programa, pero ya se combinan esfuerzos entre Cuba y Venezuela , informó.
Al referirse a Nicaragua señaló que se acaba de inaugurar un nuevo centro oftalmológico en la ciudad de Sandino, que puede operar hasta 60 pacientes nicaragüenses cada día.
Informó sobre la fundación de una Escuela de enfermería en Dominica, donde se está apoyando un programa de formación de enfermeros en el Caribe, incluyendo la atención a pacientes con VIH-Sida.
A lo anterior debe añadirse que más de 600 jóvenes de esa región se forman en esta especialidad actualmente en la Isla.
Al responder una de las inquietudes de los presentes en la conferencia, señaló que actualmente hay más de 31 mil profesionales y técnicos cubanos de la salud en el exterior. De ellos más de 17 mil son médicos. Es un porcentaje que permite que nuestro país mantenga sus servicios de salud. Ello es posible porque cada año se forman en nuestras universidades miles de médicos cubanos.
Precisó que más de 54 mil jóvenes extranjeros estudian la carrera de medicina. En Cuba lo hacen 24 mil y unos 28 mil se forman en las brigadas médicas cubanas tanto en Venezuela como en el resto del mundo. Al referirse al aspecto remunerativo señaló que el medico cubano en el país donde trabaje sólo recibe un estipendio. El gobierno receptor asume su alimentación. El galeno recibe su salario en Cuba y se apoya a su familia con una ayuda económica.
En relación con África hay una amplia asistencia. En estos momentos más de 2000 profesionales y técnicos trabajan en más de 35 países de ese continente. “Nuestra cooperación se concreta allí en la agricultura, la alfabetización, el deporte y la salud.” Recientemente se inauguró un importante centro oftalmológico en Mali.En esa región estamos insertados en la lucha contra el VIH-Sida en cooperación con los ministerios de salud de esos países.
Al referirse a las perspectivas con África estimó que son muy positivas y Cuba continuará enviando médicos y profesionales a los países africanos que lo soliciten. Estos momentos están cooperando con el Congo, Chad, Burquina y Níger.
También se han fundado varias facultades de medicina, como las de Guinea Ecuatorial, Gambia y Eritrea.
Aclaró que la cooperación internacional con África no tiene fines de lucro. “ No tiene fines comerciales. Sabemos las enormes necesidades de África” .
Para nosotros lo importante es recibir la experiencia y formación de nuestros profesionales, que al prestar sus servicios enriquecen su formación.
“Recibimos el apoyo moral de los países africanos en muchos escenarios internacionales lo que significa un importante incentivo para la cooperación con África, concluyó.
