It’s Xmas – Welcome to Manchester Plc

MULE, 20-11-2009 14:21

Businesses in the centre of Manchester must wish it could be Christmas every day. Or to be more precise, that the Christmas shopping period came more frequently. They got an early present of their own this week, when the Council proudly announced it will be providing city-centre shops with a free marketing campaign worth £600,000. Read more | 2 comments >>

Lobbying at the Tory Conference

MULE, 20-10-2009 09:52

It’s been over a week since the Tory conference left town. For several days, inside the almost militarised city centre, shadow ministers and carefully briefed mouths gushed ‘honesty’. Manchester didn’t seem to pay that much attention. Read more >>

Leopards Can’t Change Their Spots, Nor Can Capitalists

Richard Mellor, 17-09-2009 17:16

Nuclear New Build Blessed by Bishop of Carlisle

Marianne Birkby, 21-08-2009 14:36

Carlisle Cathedral - Jesus would be turning the tables over!
The new Bishop of Carlisle has given his blessing to new nuclear build in Cumbria, proclaiming “I am very enthusiastic about nuclear power as a green option for the future.”
Radiation Free Lakeland sent an open letter to the Bishop in June - there has been no reply. Today representatives from Carlisle Action on Climate Change and Radiation Free Lakeland delivered a letter direct to Carlisle Cathedral. Read more >>

Nuclear Power Trashing the Climate

marianne birkby, 15-08-2009 12:42

The Joker
Nuclear Power produces EMISSIONS MUCH MORE POWERFUL THAN CO2 - not to mention nearly 500,000 tonnes of Co2 last year from Sellafield's gas plant. The barrage of pro nuke propaganda is aiming to bounce the country into nuclear new build. MP for Copeland Jamie Reed has been handsomely rewarded for consistently lying to Parliament about "homegrown, climate friendly and safe" nuclear power.

Closed doors at the Council

The Mule, 06-08-2009 09:06

Parliament has been under attack lately (not literally, unfortunately) for its lack of ‘transparency’. It took a plucky mole to steal the documents, and public spiritedly flog them for £300,000 to the Telegraph to find out how much of our money was being spent on crystal grapefruit bowls and £200 pens (stand up Gorton MP Gerald Kaufman). Should we be worried about the BNP?

Andrew Bowman, 05-08-2009 22:02

In years gone by, there’s been more interest amongst the British public in the Eurovision Song Contest than the European Parliamentary Elections. The election of Nick Griffin and Andrew Brons, leaders of the British National Party (BNP), has changed all that. How are these racist loons representing us? And how worried should we be? Protest Mediators: A Plan To Make Protest Even More Benign

Keith Farnish, 03-08-2009 07:49

What is the point of protest?

To create change. I would have thought that was obvious; it is the only rational response to the question. So why has so little change happened as a result of protest in the Western world in the last 30 years? Read more | 6 comments >>

Poet who blew whistle on Sellafield dies.

marianne birkby, 23-07-2009 21:13

Duncan Ball outside Sellafield during Peace Vigil of 2007
Talented poet and former nuclear foreman Duncan Ball died on July 17th aged 49. He was a man who tried repeatedly to blow the whistle on unsafe practices in the Magnox plant at Sellafield where he was employed as a foreman. His subsequent experience followed the same route as the dissident scientists who were sacked from Sellafield after expressing doubts about nuclearsafety in the 70’s (NEW STATESMAN July 1983)
