Sikhs gather for Vaisakhi Parade

Notts IMC | 19.04.2006 09:10 | Culture

The Sikh Vaisakhi Parade is essentially a harvest festival and new year rolled into one. Vaisakhi, also spelled Baisakhi, is thus one of the most important dates in the Sikh calendar. It also commemorates 1699, the year Sikhism was born as a collective faith.

In Nottingham, the parade started at the Sikh Temple in Church Road, Lenton at 12:00 on Sunday 16 April. Then walked to other temples in the city, visiting Noel Street, Gladstone Street in Forest Fields, where walkers were given refreshments. Then, onto Basford.

Sorry how dose this meet the editorial guidelines of IMC!
This festival takes place in every city, it is not new. especially when you have craft making at the local castle which would be a better feature. I just dont see how it links in with anything. even the text saying its like a harvest festival is very misleading it is far more than that the food has been blessed and contains Gods energy that we then eat, you need to do more research

Why

this is within OUR ed guidelines

21.04.2006 17:31

hello. Well, I disagree.

We at Nottinghamshire Indymedia, have discussed what is within our own editorial guidelines a number of times, both in Nottinghamshire and UK Kollective. We have concluded that we wish to invite and contribute posts that are beyond negative issues and news reports of actions, activism etc. We wish also to contribute items on cultural issues that help to paint a more positive image of our area / region.

Here are some examples of what I mean.

My local collective and many from other areas have been very supportive of these ideas. Should they change their outlook, I would then review my own contributions.

You may like to know that I keep a 'collected post' page at:

 http://tash.gn.apc.org/Indymedia_bookmarks.htm

when you may note that the majority of my work IS covering more hard news /issue based work.

Keep it up!

30.04.2006 12:16

I like reading about stuff like this. Indymedia is simply an independent eye on local happenings, which isn't all just activism and protests.

The mainstream press ignores most cultural festivals, yet is filled with Christmas bollocks from autumn onwards. It is refreshing and educational to have the chance to see reports and pictures of other festivals, occasions and so on...
