M1 action from Luton to Sheffield

Road Block | 30.10.2006 14:37 | Climate Chaos | Ecology | Sheffield

Banners were unfurled across M1 motorway bridges from Luton to Sheffield today as the Stern report on climate change was published. The M1 is due to be widened from Luton to Leeds, at a cost to the tax payer of £3.74 billion. The widening will allow traffic to grow and cause more CO2 emissions. Road transport is currently 21 per cent of UK emissions and rises every year.

No Widening M1 Alliance today unfurled banners across the M1 motorway at Luton, Milton Keynes, Leicester, Nottingham, Derby and Sheffield. This coincided with the publication of the Stern report which warned of the disastrous consequences of climate change.

Widening of the M1 is planned to take place from Luton right up to Leeds, via Milton Keynes, Leicester, Nottingham, Derby, Chesterfield and Shefield, at the collosal cost of £3.74 billion.

Banners read "Climate Emergency" and "More roads = more cars".

Currently road transport accounts for 21 per cent of UK CO2 emissions (excluding international aviation). Traffic and CO2 are predicted to rise massively in the next 20 years. The Highways Agency admit that widening of the M1 between junctions 21-30 will increase CO2 by over 21 per cent.

The widening can be stopped. Community groups have formed along the entire length to unite to defeat the proposals. Get involved! Recently a new parallel M6 motorway between Birmingham and Manchester was defeated because of campaigning.
