Shell Come to Nottingham

Pueblo Unido | 03.03.2008 15:39 | Anti-militarism | Climate Chaos | Social Struggles

Shell is NOT welcome in Nottingham!

This is the message that concerned Nottingham Students and Nottingham residents want to get across to Shell when it hosts a “Recruitment Event” at the University of Nottingham this Thursday the 6th at 18.30 in the Trent Building.

Shell, in conjunction with University of Nottingham’s so-called “Career Development Centre” is hosting a “Recruitment Event” this Thursday the 6th of March at 18.30 in the Trent Building (Room LG11) under the heading “Engineering, Manufacturing and Processing”. But for many concerned students, environmentalists and Nottingham residents alike, a more fitting title would be “Exploiting, Murdering and Polluting”.

Some concerned individuals are planning to attend the event with two main aims. The first is that Shell understands that its activities are not welcome in Nottingham. The second is that the potential employees of Shell are educated about the murderous and destructive actions of the multinational oil company and consequently decide that a career with Shell is undesirable.

Shell were 'PWND' tonight

06.03.2008 23:36

Student activist turnout was spectacular. The aim was for Shell to use students to bring up Ideas on how to deal with issues in a hypothetical scenario based around a West African island. A number of attendees pointed out Shells history in West Africa (namely the Niger Delta). The corporate representatives claimed they were interested in 'people and environment' but sought to establish what 'risk' in the situation. Risks established included local communities disgruntled at the rape of the local environment that Shell were advocating. So activists giving presentations pointed to the obvious tactics shell could use to ‘liquidate’ the activist threat including funding dictatorships. Notable quotes: ‘they’re intimidating me…corporate bullying!’, ‘peak oil/climate change is karma…I think that’s what they call it’, and ‘This is called a business plan, I call it a shower of bastards’.
