Heckling Heckler & Koch

Notts Indie | 10.09.2008 09:25 | Anti-militarism

On Mon 8th Sep the monthly picket of arms dealers Heckler & Koch took place at the entrance to Easter Park, Lenton. Locals wearing Heckle H&K T-shirts were joined by supporters from Brighton's Smash EDO campaign and enjoyed a great selection of tunes on the mobile sound system, as well as refreshments by Veggies.

The picket was the first since revelations that H&K weapons had found their way to Georgian special forces in South Ossetia, even though the country was at war. This was in spite of a German embargo on arms deals to Georgia.

Not many Nottingham residents are aware of it, but the city is home to a major multinational arms company. Heckler & Koch is the world's second-largest manufacturer of guns and grenade-launchers and they are based in Lenton NG7, not far from the University and QMC.

  • Millions of H&K weapons are in use in more than 90 countries.
  • H&K guns have been sold to repressive regimes and conflict zones including Saudi Arabia, Sierra Leone, Indonesia and Burma.
  • In Darfur, the Janjaweed has been armed with H&K assault rifles.
  • In Kenya, H&K rifles were used in recent post-election massacres.
  • In Iraq, H&K machine guns are being used by notorious private army Blackwater, whose mercenaries killed unarmed civilians.
  • H&K guns have caused 1.5 million deaths worldwide.

The Global Arms Industry

The arms trade fuels conflict and saps funds that should be spent on healthcare and education. In many countries, armed conflict prevents development and causes destruction, suffering and poverty. Small arms - the type of weapons made by H&K - are the true weapons of mass destruction: Each year, half a million people are killed by small arms, and another 1.5 million are wounded. Millions more have to flee their homes and become refugees to escape from small arms conflict.

The arms trade is inherently unethical: Legal loopholes, brokers and gunrunners make it easy to evade arms embargoes, and older weapons are often resold to countries with poor human rights. This is how Heckler & Koch weapons have come to be used by repressive regimes, terrorists, armed gangs and child soldiers around the world.

Shut Down H&K

The campaign aims to spread awareness about what is going on behind H&K's closed doors and put pressure on the company to close its business. There are pickets of H&K's Easter Park site every 2nd Monday of the month at 4pm. See the campaign website for up to date information.

The Police

Unsurprisingly, given that H&K supply them with guns, the police have a very cosy relationship with the arms dealers. Since the campaign began, the company's site has been given very special protection. The regular pickets have been harassed by Metropolitan police Forward Intelligence Team photographers and Notts police evidence gatherers. People who rang H&K's (unmarked) doorbell were met by rapid response armed police and threatened with arrest under anti-terror legislation.

The police have been attempting to undermine the campaign from behind the scenes as well, at the request of H&K staff. When local mainstream media outlets have contacted H&K for comment on stories relating to the campaign, shortly after they have received contact from Nottinghamshire police telling them that it would be "irresponsible" to publicise the location of H&K's Nottingham premises. Those media outlets have often backed down from upsetting the police.

Other Community Campaigns

Given the numerous high profile murders with guns that have taken place in Nottingham over the past few years, you would imagine that there would be many community campaigns that might have an interest in shutting down dealers like H&K. However, the major organisations fighting gun crime get their funding from the police and are unlikely to bite the hand that feeds. It seems likely, though, that there are many Nottingham residents who would be allies in the fight against guns in the city, if only they knew what was happening on their doorsteps.

There are community-based anti-militarist campaigns in local cities that are linking up with the H&K campaign. In Derby, attention has focused on Rolls Royce's Raynesway factory, where the nuclear reactors for Britain's Trident submarines are made. Also, there is news of a Thales factory in Leicester, where unmanned drones are manufactured. These are surveillance aircraft, but there are plans to weaponise them in future.

heckler and koch and gangland guns

this story from last may confirms H&C guns are falling into the hands of gangsters

GETTING A GUN FROM THE ARMY IS AS EASY AS SHOPPING AT TESCO;
EXCLUSIVE EX-GANGSTER REVEALS UNDERWORLD TRADE IN MILITARY WEAPONS

By LYNN McPHERSON

Pg. 22

UNDERWORLD bosses can pick up stolen Army guns "as easily as going to Tesco", gangland sources claim.

A former criminal boasted to BBC investigators that he had handled hundreds of weapons bought or hired by gangsters.

And more than half were British military issue obtained through his contacts in the forces.

Army guns were used in a notorious shooting at a Glasgow garage that left one man dead and two injured.

And the BBC source, named only as Mark, said: "People have a list of what they want and essentially it's as simple as going to Tesco for firearms.

"You have the contacts and the network there. You place your order, they're delivered.

"Deals are taking place in car parks pubs, places like that. It's a lot safer and you're guaranteed quality."

His claims come in the wake of a number of cases in which stolen Army weapons have been linked to organised crime.

Raymond Anderson, 46, and James McDonald, 34, received Scotland 's longest sentences ever last month for using military weapons in the underworld murder of Michael Lyons, 21, at the garage owned by his uncle in December 2006.

They each got 35 years - 15 of these for possessing Army equipment.

Anderson's son, Raymond jnr, 22, and gangster Kevin Carroll were accused of stealing an Army machine gun smuggled into Scotland by squaddies serving in Iraq .

The Heckler & Koch military light support weapon is thought to have been stolen by TA soldiers and demonstrated for the first time the direct link alleged between Glasgow gangland and stolen military weapons.

But the pair walked free from Glasgow Sheriff Court after the Crown decided not to proceed.

Royal Marine John Hickman was jailed for seven-and-a- half years last November for stealing a gun from a nuclear submarine base.

Hickman, 24, took the Browning 9mm automatic pistol when he was stationed at Faslane on the Clyde - home of Britain 's Trident fleet. A 600- rounds-a-minute SA80 assault rifle went missing at the same time but has never been recovered.

Mark reveals the secrets of the illicit Army arms trade in a Radio 5 Live special by investigative reporter Donal MacIntyre.

A former Royal Military Police investigator also features on the programme.

The source says serving soldiers are the preferred source for weapons because they are more likely never to have been linked to previous crimes.

The Royal Military Police carry out searches of troops leaving conflict zones in a bid to stop weapons being smuggled back into the UK - known as "Operation Plunder".

But the former senior investigator said: "This has quite clearly not been successful because of a number of weapons that have got through the system and into the hands of criminals.

"It does tell a very alarming and serious story about the propensity of some soldiers to resort to smuggling."

More than 65 military assault rifles and automatic pistols have been stolen from British Army bases in the UK since 2000 and another nine are reported "lost".

But the MoD claimed: "We have no evidence to suggest any guns used in UK crimes were smuggled into the UK by HM Forces personnel from the operational theatres."

The Donal MacIntyre Programme is on BBC Radio 5 live tonight at 7pm.

db I could kiss you! For some time the campaign has suspected that H&K weapons are used by criminals in the UK, but that article is the first proof we've found.

November & December pickets

27.10.2008 13:31

Please note that while the November & December 2008 monthly pickets against Heckler & Koch will go ahead, they are likely to be smaller events.

This is because the campaign's main event in the remainder of 2008 is the joint demonstration with No Borders in the city centre on Saturday November 29th. Supporters who can only spare the time for one demo are encouraged to go to that event.

However, those who do want to picket H&K can do so on the second Mondays of November (10th) and December (8th) at 16:00 at the gate of Easter Park.
