Notts CND 50th anniversary event

Bertrand | 11.11.2008 10:30 | Anti-militarism

The Square Centre in Nottingham was packed last Saturday night as members and supporters came together to celebrate 50 years of the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament.

The audience was treated to an entertaining evening of lively music, poetry and prose ranging from the foot-tapping though the humorous to the poignant. We were also well fed with a range of delicious food prepared by volunteers.

If a theme emerged during the evening it was a genuine care and compassion for all those who share this planet. So, an event organised by and for CND chose to donate all the proceeds from the door and food to the Refugee Forum Destitution Fund. And one of the songs was the moving The Last Leviathan about the slaughter of the whales, reminding us that two people from Nottingham are about to sail from Melbourne into the Antarctic with Sea Shepherd to spend the coming months stopping the Japanese whalers. The song is here:

Well done to the organisers and lets hope we don’t need commemorate another 50 years of CND!
