Sumac Skill share goes massive!

Skill sharer | 26.11.2008 14:30

December 6th: The Sumac Skillshare Goes Massive!

The 6th will be a day of non-stop Skill Sharing with a number of useful workshops to be held in various locations in and around the Sumac Centre.

What is the Sumac Skill Share?
The Sumac Skillshare is a series of workshops run for free by volunteers. Our aim is to build the confidence and skills of people in our community by sharing the skills we already have. It also aims to help prepare us for dealing with climate change and peak oil.

Some workshops have limited places and you need to book in advance. Currently sessions are aimed at adults. Children must be accompanied.

Workshops to be held at the Sumac Centre (245 Gladstone St, Nottingham, NG7 6HX):

Home energy efficiency: 10am-11.30am
Learn how to combat climate change at its source. Over 50% of CO2 released in this country comes from buildings, but we can easily reduce that figure by making simple and non intrusive changes to our homes. This workshop will give you ideas how.

DIY education: 10am-12 noon
If we are to change the world, we need to re-educate ourselves. Learn how to use popular education techniques to help people to connect their lives to larger social problems and start to effect change.

Bike maintenance: Limited numbers – please book. 10am-1pm
Cycling is a great way to cut down on vehicle use, and to keep fit and happy! Come to this workshop to learn how to do basic maintenance servicing and repair work yourself.

Vegan Pie Making: Limited numbers – please book. 2pm-5pm.
A very practical skillshare! Learn to make delicious, perfect for wintertime vegan pies – then eat them later on during the People's Kitchen at the Sumac Centre between 6.30pm and 7.30pm.

Basic mending electrics: Please book in advance. 2pm-5pm
How to mend electric items in the home: both household appliances, and lights. Covers simple skills like how to wire a plug. Bring along broken things and learn how to mend them.

Clothing alteration: 11am-4pm. Please call to let us know you're coming.
Got holes in your favourite jeans or have a special dress that's a little too big? Learn how to alter and mend your clothes and make them more funky! Will include how to deal with holes and stains using applique. Bring your clothes to mend. (Unfortunately we cannot offer taking trousers in at the waist.)

The following workshops will be held at a studio on Mansfield Road (15 minute walk from the Sumac Centre. Call Clare for directions, or if you have any other questions, on 07980 794458)

Basket making: Limited numbers – please book. 10am-1pm
Learn to weave beautiful and functional baskets exclusively from reclaimed materials. Ideal for Christmas presents and much more. Bring along waste materials such as plastic packaging, juice cartons and other things you think may be useful.

Book making: 2pm-5pm. Limited numbers – please book.
Learn a beautiful book making technique exclusively using reclaimed materials. Make a 2009 diary to give to someone for Christmas or to use yourself. Bring along old envelopes and other papers for pages and scraps of fabric for jackets, as well as anything else you think may be useful.

And don’t forget…
Vegan Cake Making: 7th December, 2-5pm. Limited numbers – please book.
Come and learn how to make excellent cakes without using dairy products or eggs!
