Demonstrate against Heckler & Koch Monday 11 May

Boraxwoman | 09.05.2009 19:32 | Anti-militarism

Gather in Lenton at 3.30pm to listen to speeches, including from well-known comedian and activist MARK THOMAS (who is appearing at the Nottingham Playhouse that evening).

Speeches by Mark and others will be followed by a protest at the gates of Heckler & Koch, Easter Park, Lenton Lane with banners and music. Bring what you want to find there.

This is an anniversary demo - for the last year, we have been outside H&K's gates every month.

Heckler & Koch is the world’s second-largest manufacturer of handguns, assault rifles, submachine guns and grenade launchers. Millions of H&K weapons are in use in over 90 countries worldwide. The Nottingham facility is responsible for international sales outside NATO and the United States.

Heckler & Koch guns have caused an estimated 1.5 million deaths worldwide. They are used by repressive regimes, warlords, child soldiers and gangsters. They have been used in Darfur, in Kenya, in Kosovo, in Iraq by the Blackwater mercenaries, and in South Ossetia, amongst other places.

The owners of Easter Park (H&K's landlords) are LV= (formerly Liverpool Victoria) and we are also calling for a boycott of them.

The Campaign to Shut Down Heckler and Koch was established by Nottingham residents who are incensed that a city notorious for gun crime should be hosts to a company selling guns.

Organised by Shut Down H&K.

ANTI-ARMS campaigners from Nottingham have been to the German headquarters of defence manufacturers Heckler & Koch.

The trip to Oberndorf, where there were two protests, marked the company's 60th anniversary in March.

Its UK base is at Easter Park, Lenton Lane, where members of the Nottingham Anti-Heckler & Koch Campaign regularly protest.

While in Germany, the Nottingham protesters met peace groups.

A PEACE conference being held at Nottingham University will debate whether modern conflicts are the result of a capitalist system.

Among the confirmed speakers will be Milan Rai, editor of Peace News; Dr Matthew Rendall, lecturer in Politics and International Relations; Dr Srila Roy, lecturer in School of Sociology; and Steve Yemm, from the think-tank Compass.

Amnesty International and Campaign Against the Arms Trade will also have representatives, as well as local anti-arms group Shut Down Heckler and Koch.

Issues on the agenda include: Why is there so much fighting, destruction and suffering on our planet? Is modern warfare really 'human nature'? and How are conflicts related to economics and geopolitics?

There will be talks, interactive workshops, discussions, panel debates, films and food.

It takes place at the Portland Building from 10am to 7pm on Saturday May 9. Entry is free.

ANTI-ARMS campaigners are planning a protest in Nottingham as a result of the recent conflict between Russia and Georgia.

They claim Heckler & Koch are immoral because they supply military forces with assault rifles.

There will be a picket outside the firm's offices at Easter Park, Lenton Lane on Monday, September 8, from 4pm.
