Help Page

Viewing Indymedia

As you have found your way here, you can most probably browse the site. But are fonts the wrong size for you? Try using a different browser such as Firefox, you can set the size of some of the generic headline fonts within it, as these set by browser you use not this site.

Accessing media files

You may already have software to access media. But if you use MS Windows then audio files can be listened to with FooBar2000 and video files viewed with VLC Player or Helix Player.

Publishing

Go to the publish page, (this link) For large media uploads use ftp upload part of the publish form, which is more reliable.

Security certificate

When you publish your news, a window will pop up two or three times, and ask you to accept a security certificate. If you don't accept it, you won't be able to upload your reports.
If you use Mozilla based browsers, you can tell it to accept and remember the certificate. Then you will be prompted one time less. Also if you import the CACert then you will not be prompted.

reports:

You may wish to write your report in a word processor then copy and paste it into the forms on the publish page so if it fails to upload then you have a spare copy of your writing to try again. At moment reports posted in HTML will have HTML stripped from them when displayed. This may be changed in future when the HTML can be checked for harmfull code by our system, but for now it all gets lost and plain text displayed. But we ( with admin access ) can switch the article to allow HTML formating to be displayed. If you copy and paste an article from email or other text wrapped source you may wish to remove line breaks to ensure viewer have amount of scolling required to read the article minimized.

Images:

Please resize your images to 550 pixles width maximum before uploading them to the website!

Other Media:

Note you must fill in some text content as well as media upload or it will be rejected. Please do state what may be required to view the media, and other details.

To distribute large high quality video files then use v2v. Also see indypeer for more about Peer 2 Peer filesharing.

Options

You will be given some options:

Region this is optional. All postings appear automatically on the UK frontpage newswire. There is a maximum of 2 regions one can tick. If you tick a region, your article will also appear in the local page you choose. Do no repost article to get it on all regional pages, this may lead to all your postings being hidden. Note the local pages are linked to local collectives that manage them. If want to set up a local collective see contact page, join email lists, help out and engage.

Topic this is optional too. All postings appear automatically on the UK frontpage newswire. If you tick one or two topics, for instance 'ecology' and 'anti-militarism', your article will in addition appear in the pages dedicated to 'ecology' and 'anti-militarism'. People who only want to read articles on these issues will see it. There is a maximum number of 3 topics that you can choose.
Do not abuse (spam) the selections; this may lead to article being completely hidden

Delays
Reports can take quite awhile before they appear. Large media files will allways take a long time to appear. There are often considerable delays in site update at night and occasions durring the day. Some pages such as topic pages take much longer than front page to update. Please do not repost. Also see IMCUK mirror server status page.

All contributions are considered availiable for re-use without seeking permission from author as long as those that re-use them allow further free re-use of the derivative work. This is know as copyleft. In future for clarity we may let you specify what terms the contribution is available for re-use from a range of off-the-shelf licenses of which we hope you will pick all to allow widest re use. You can of course specify this in a post now. You can allow any re-use by contributing to the public domain or specify licenses, see: http://creativecommons.org/license/ and http://www.gnu.org/copyleft/fdl.html
( a link to that url should do rather than copying whole license )

As IMC UK has changed to a new codebase in 2003 (Mir).
Users and moderators took a while to get used to the new code - and we are still tackling bugs and developing features - please bear with us.
If you are looking for content from sub pages on old site much of it has been imported into the new site; see archive.

We will later add more to this help page, do get in touch if you have suggestions. You may wish to look at our documentation project.

General feedback can be email to us at: imc-uk list Check our Documentation of the migration to Mir, the archives of the tech and features lists, and a summary of our working practices.
If you find any bugs please mail to the tech list ( with details to help us track them down ) - thanks!

Please also send suggestions for improvements to this help file to relavent list.

we'll keep u posted
