Alternative bookshop in Bristol closes

Bristl'er, 29-08-2005 00:09

After 23 years of community service, Bristol's last remaining alternative community bookshop has closed. Sadly the closure of Greenleaf Books reflects an ongoing trend of the closure of alternative bookshops, as the pressure of trading within capitalist society becomes overwhelming. Hands around Coate Water

Simon, 13-11-2004 19:06

Join Hands Around Coate poster
On a cold but clear and sunny Saturday afternoon, the edge of the lake at Coate Water was bounded by a chain of over a thousand cardboard cut-out hands, each with someone's personal dedication of why Coate is special to them, held aloft by Save Coate! campaigners and supporters. Will this be enough to convince Swindon Borough Council, Redrow & Persimmon Homes, and the University of Bath, that we want Coate Water Country Park to remain a country park, not a town park surrounded by concrete? Who gives a **** about Swindon Town Centre?

Simon, 19-09-2004 21:21

"Who gives a [tick] about Swindon Town Centre?" - Swindon Civic Trust's stall
On Saturday the 18th September 2004, two very different ideas were being presented to the public in the Brunel centre in Swindon. One concerned the town centre, and the other concerned the land at the south-eastern edge of Swindon, known as Coate. One was being promoted by employees of a local planning company, the other by volunteers for a local charity.

Although these two stalls may have appeared unrelated to the casual observer, they were in fact inextricably linked, by the University of Bath and by issues of town planning, development and accountability to the public. Read more | 2 comments >>

Shaw Forest saved, but new threat to Coate

Simon, 25-07-2004 21:15

Shaw Forest - saved!
Swindon Borough Council "... reaffirms, and will continue, its existing policy of support for the Great Western Community Forest plan, and specifically council owned land at Shaw Forest Park (which includes Phases 1, 2 & 3), and resolves that these sites should be protected and retained as Community Forest for future generations." But will they show the same support for Coate? Read more | 1 comment >>

Stonehenge Summer Solstice 2004 Report + Pics

sunshine, 25-06-2004 13:38

The sun breaking through the shrouding mist
With rain widespread before the solstice and a bad forecast, the number at this year's 'managed access' solstice celebration at Stonehenge (approx 21,000) was down by between one third to one half of the previous year. It still rocked though, and the issues remain as relevant today as they were ten or twenty years ago... Read more | 10 comments >>

"Broken promises!!! 1) Front Garden 2) Coate Water 3) Shaw Forest"
In a show of unity, campaigners and residents from across Swindon marched into the town centre by various routes, converging on Swindon Borough Council's civic offices for a rally addressed by speakers from local campaign groups and organisations and Swindon South's MP Julia Drown. Photos are from the Shaw Forest leg of the march. Read more >>
