18-01-2011 08:45 | Analysis | Ecology | Sheffield | World

Did you know that in Livermore, California a bulb has been lit constantly since 1901 and is still going strong? This week's headline piece is a radio adaptation of The Lightbulb Conspiracy, a film about how the first international cartel not only increased prices but to decreased the lifetime of lightbulbs. We also hear Juliet Schor on overproduction and radio adaptations of Annie Leonard's The Story of Bottled Water, The Story of Cosmetics and The Story of Stuff, plus Heather Rogers' The Hidden Life of Garbage.

The Machines Change, the Work Remains the Same

10-01-2011 09:52 | Climate Chaos | Ecology | Energy Crisis | Sheffield | World

When I first got involved in left/radical political organizing in the 1990s, I don’t recall any of us referring to our efforts as “phone activism” or calling ourselves “fax activists.” A friend who started organizing in the early 1960s assured me that he never heard the term “mimeograph activism” in those days. We used telephones, fax machines, and mimeographs in our organizing work, but the machines didn’t define our work and we didn’t spend a lot of time arguing about the implications of using them.

#532 - Hearing the Inner Calling (Green Gone Wrong and Independent Diplomat)

31-12-2010 18:40 | Analysis | Ecology | Social Struggles | Sheffield | World

Audio
We start a new decade of Unwelcome Guests with a show appropriate to New Year's Resolutions. In our first hour we hear Heather Rogers on her new book, Green Gone Wrong, about why buying 'green' products will never solve the world's ecological crises. Our second hour presents a healthier alternative for resolution material - two individuals who have heard an inner calling and decided to take up an issue, to act upon their convictions in spite of the change to their routine; Charles Eisenstein tells how he came to write Ascent of Humanity, and Carne Ross tells why he quit the UK Diplomatic Service and how he came to start a non-profit diplomatic service for marginalised people groups.

Cancun Agreement stripped bare by Bolivia's dissent

17-12-2010 12:21 | Analysis | Climate Chaos | Ecology | Sheffield | World

In the famous Hans Christian Anderson fable, The Emperor's New Clothes, a weaver famously plays on an emperor's arrogance and persuades him to wear a non-existent suit with the argument that it is only invisible to the 'hopelessly stupid.' The moment of truth comes, as we can all remember, when a child in an otherwise silent crowd yells out, “But he is not wearing any clothes!” What we don't always recall is that the naked Emperor suspects the child may be telling the truth, but carries on marching proudly and unclothed regardless.

Canadian furmongers delay Israeli ban on fur

14-11-2010 02:19 | Animal Liberation | Ecology | Social Struggles | South Coast | World

Israeli legislation wrote in an exception for the fur hats worn

... essentially it is Canadian fursellers delaying the passage of the
bill which would make Israel the world's first country to ban fur.
