Armenia's Struggle for Independence

23-08-2008 12:29 | Anti-militarism | History | Repression | World

Each country must find its own way, shaped by its immediate situation, and seen against the backdrop of its own specific cultural and political history. In the case of Armenia, it is evident that any perspective for real economic progress must be based on cooperation with its neighbors in the context of a regional development perspective. This means negotiating political solutions to the continuing conflicts with Azerbaijan and Turkey, in order to reestablish normal economic and trade relations. To achieve this, requires a capable leadership dedicated to the future of its nation and its people, as well as support from the international community. Armenians are seeking such leadership.

On any one day there is war somewhere on this planet. Either with a big double U or a little one. But some will be interested in information sources and news resources on the current conflict in South Ossetia because it is the first time Russian troops have engaged since the collapse of the USSR.

The death of Solzhenitsyn & the passing of good prisoners.

04-08-2008 17:42 | Analysis | Culture | History | World

"think about it"
As we all know Aleksandr Isayevich Solzhenitsyn has died. With his passing we all have opportunity to comment on Gulags and the mechanisms of state terror & control used to create and maintain the Soviet system & also a duty to apply such criticisms to the mechanisms of state terror & control used to create and maintain Western hegemonies.

The best way to do that in my opinion is not to wax overly lyrical in phrase or wade needlessly deep in intellectual erudition. All we need do is cast a quick eye over how today the West as Russia prepares to lay Solzhenitsyn to rest.

On this day the 31st of July in 1790, one Samuel Hopkins (aged 47) made a piece of history when his improved method "in the making of Pot ash and Pearl ash by a new Apparatus and Process" became the first US patent with George Washington's signature. This was a way of protecting Samuel Hopkins improvement of an Ethiopian idea which had been used globally for several hundred years. A important milestone in the history of property as theft had been passed.

"As of February 2008, the PTO has granted over 7,950,000 patents"

We now live in a world where everything from gizmo to gimmick, nicknack to genetic code is filed away under a patent or patent-pending.

It all ends with a T-shirt - Chavez & the King of Spain hug & make up.

25-07-2008 14:50 | Analysis | Culture | History | World

neither of them do shut up. therein lies the twain lie of global class war
The Spanish speaking world gave the English speaking world a simple phrase to remember & as many millions did put on their mobile as a ringtone at the 17th Iberian Americas summit in 2007. Hugo Chavez speaking out of turn heckled the Spanish PM Zapatero gurgling away in fine form over how Aznar was a fascist. To which Zapatero (ZP) replied in exasperation that Aznar had been democratically elected (presumedly by the fascist half of Spain's voters). Hugo "the man" Chavez didn't stop his harrangue. Finally the King of Spain, Mr Bourbon shouted "porque no te calles" complete with upside down question and exclamation marks in the familiar form meaing "Why don't you shut up?!"
