Coffin at Copenhagen

16-11-2009 17:59

The Copenhagen Climate Change conference next month, once the great hope of environmentalists, had its teeth pulled this week after an accord between China and the United States to postpone an envisaged global treaty that would have set limits to gas and carbon dioxide emissions world-wide.
With the main polluters out of the treaty project the conference is a lame duck.
Ironically the disheartening Sino-American accord was reached during President Barack Obama’s visit to Beijing and indicates the Chinese may have used their credit-power - the U.S. owns billions of dollars in trade to Beijing -to bend the U.S. administration to their will and in the process weaken a U.S, president who won his mandate on a pledge to tackle climate change and had proclaimed himself a leader in the battle to save the planet.

#COP15 Climate Treaty set to Fail: Time for Action

06-11-2009 11:51

Barcelona sessions suspended after African walk out
The grim (but not unexpected) admission that the COP15 UN Climate summit next month will not secure a new treaty on climate change has finally been made (see links below).

Those watching the developments over the last month will not be surprised. Each day seemed to bring another statement pushing the hope of a deal back further and further.

Over the last week at the Barcelona pre-COP15 talks, there have been crisis meetings to discuss fall-back positions. The African bloc walked out with the support of the G77 group of 130 countries, with further support from other countries and NGOs whilst campaigners demonstrated in the streets and blocked entrances (see  http://www.indymedia.ie/article/94647)

Will mass tourism on CRUISE SHIPS sink VENICE?

03-11-2009 17:28

An average three to four of these floating hotels, each carrying about 3,000 passengers plus 1,000-crew, navigate through the Venetian lagoon and the city center every day. They pass along Saint Mark’s Square where the ocean-graph on the central Campanile (tower) oscillates madly as it registers a small underground tsunami with each passage.

The 300-350 Show: Forests & Copenhagen pt.2

01-11-2009 14:47

Audio
As Europe stands accused of blocking the protection of intact natural forests and introducing logging-friendly language into the UN draft climate deal, we take a look at some of the key components that should be in an effective deal for saving the world’s forests. As Nathaniel Dyer of the Rainforest Foundation UK explains, saving forests is about a lot more than simply throwing money at the problem. Land rights, governance and demand management are also critical. And payment for forest protection should come from public funds rather than carbon markets.

With one month to go till the 10th anniversary of the seattle/euston/worldwide demonstration/protests/riots that successfully disrupted the WTO (and began a process whereby that organisation continues to struggle to get a new round of trade talks going...) and highlighted the growing anti-capitalist, alter-globalist movement of movements, it's time to start planning anniversary actions... N Power's Didcot coal powered station under siege

26-10-2009 09:39

Didcot Power Station
Climate campaigners have this morning shut down N-Power’s flagship coal plant at Didcot in Oxforshire.

The twenty peaceful protesters rode their push-bikes past security guards at 4.30am this morning before splitting into two groups. One team has shut down the giant coal conveyors which feed the boilers at the plant, while a second group of nine men and women has climbed the inside of the iconic 200m-high chimney and reached the top. They say they have enough food and water to stay in place for ‘weeks, not days’ - during which time the plant will be unable to operate. Already the activists in the chimney are securing the route behind them to ensure they can’t be reached by police and security guards.
