Fukushima fuels wave of protests against UK’s 'nuclear renaissance'

As the tragedy at Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant in north-east Japan continues to unfold, campaign group Kick Nuclear is joining anti-nuclear activists from around the UK to plan a series of demonstrations and direct action events.

Sizewell Exclusion Zone

Sizewell Exclusion Zones The various Japanese exclusion zones mapped onto Sizewell Nuclear Power Station. Why Sizewell?
1. In 2007 the fuel pond leaked at Sizewell A and it was only accidentally detected by some contractors since the workers ignored the various alarms.
2. Sizewell B was forced to shut for 7 months last year due to problems with its primary cooling system. During the closure a fire broke out in some graphite filters but was eventually put out by 12 fire crews and site fire workers.
3. In February this year Sizewell B was forced to shut again due to another problem with its primary cooling system

Two anti nuclear campaigners, Andreas Speck (46) from London and Ian Mills (45) from Chippenham, who appeared at Lowestoft Magistrates Court today (4 January) on charges of "failing to leave land" (S69(3)(a) CJPOA 1994) when they blockaded Sizewell nuclear power station in Suffolk on 22 February 2010 [1] walked free after the case was dismissed when the prosecution did not offer any evidence.

Anti nuclear energy activists target EDF Energy

The launch of a national boycott of EDF Energy heralds the beginning of a wave of campaigns and actions designed to alert the UK to the dangers of allowing the government to give the green light to a new generation of nuclear reactors next Spring. There's a lot of work to do and very little time left to stop new nuclear for good.

Sizewell Campers Mark Anniversary of Chernobyl Disaster

Around twenty activists from the Stop Nuclear Power Network [1] have held a ceremony on the beach in front of Sizewell nuclear power station in Suffolk (England) this afternoon to mark the 24th anniversary of the world's worst ever civil nuclear disaster, at Chernobyl (Ukraine). [2] They are looking to highlight the risk of a similar catastrophe happening in Suffolk, due to a reactor meltdown [3,4] or major radioactive waste incident.

Sizewell blockaded again, in the rain (credit: M. Harrison) As government ends flawed consultation on nuclear power, anti-nuclear power activists step up resistance and blockade Sizewell nuclear power station in Suffolk, England.

Since 6.40am this morning, anti-nuclear power activists from the 'People Power not Nuclear Power Coalition' [1] have been blockading Sizewell power station in protest against the flawed government consultation on nuclear new build, which ends today, and the dumping of local democracy.

Two days into their four-day trial, the Sizewell five have been found not guilty of aggravated trespass after a blockade in 2008 of the Sizewell nuclear power station in Suffolk.

G20 Map - Squaring Up to the Square Mile - Easily printable versions

Technological gremlins and exhaustion have been banished and more easily printable versions of the maps of the Square Mile and the ExCeL Centre have now been sorted. A3 is the best size for the Square Mile map, so for those without A3 printers, there are two A4 versions you can print out and stick together with old-fashioned sticky tape. The map is downloadable as a JPEG or PDF in A4, A3 and split A3 versions, in black and white or colour.

Careering Downwards, courtesy of Cambridge University!

Check one Banner Drop! Today and tomorrow, Cambridge University are hosting a Careers Fair, which seems to comprise a motley collection of arms manufacturues, planet wreckers and Vivisectionists.

To highlight just how dubious many of the exhibitors at this event are, some activists decided to go along today.
