Countryside Alliance Update

Farmer Giles | 12.12.2000 13:15

Preparations are underway for a so called 'Pro-liberty' protest to be held in Parliament Square next Monday, 18th December when the Hunting Bill will receive its 2nd reading. It is understood that the protest will begin in Trafalgar Square at 1.30pm and large numbers are expected. - that's what the alliance are saying anyway.

Their main website is at:
 http://www.countryside- alliance.org/

...they're using the web very well now and their mailing list 'grass e-route' is very informative and on the ball with getting lots of people to sway the results of online web polls etc, watching the media and targetting responses etc

INFO on their big 18th March 2001 demo is at:
 http://www.march- info.org/

I wouldn't help their cause one bit if...

...we were to also sign up to their mailing list/s and try and counter their attempts to sway the impressions of public opinion.

might I tentatively suggest

that Indy readers should attend as observers only, to see whether any of the rural lobby may be more amenable to left wing ideas if they're given the opportunity. A counter demonstration will not serve any cause, merely alienate them. the case of the recent fuel tax protest surely shows that these people must be given a fair hearing (remember, they gave it to Greenpeace), and you should tell them what the green, socialist and anarchist movement has to offer them.
Our comrades in the USA understand the notion that small farmers can be won over to left wing ideas if only they hear a sensible case. As it is, they are certainly being influenced by their own landowning aristocracy, but that's perhaps because they can see no alternative. Offer them one.

1. Message from Sam Butler

Thank you to all those who came to London yesterday,
and to those of you who could not come, but were
there in spirit. No one demonstration or act is going to
win us the day in the battle for the continuation of hunting.
However, yesterday's presence of over 5,000 supporters
was yet another illustration of everyone's commitment and
as ever, invaluable support was given by individuals, the
hunting associations and members of the Union of Country
Sports Workers. Many of you had travelled miles, and gave
up a days work at this busy time in the run up to Christmas
for no personal gain save for standing up for the rights of
those who wishto hunt. Your presence was a stand against
the vindictiveness of politicians who have, out of spite,
introduced a Bill which,if passed, will severely curtail
personal liberties.

The Bill attained its Second Reading with a majority in
the House of Commons and now goes forward to further
debate and a vote on the options sometime in the middle
of January. This was to be expected. Jack Straw, the
Home Secretary stated during the debate that his own
thinking has been 'much informed by Lord Burns Report',
and he would not vote for a complete ban. Jack Straw's
comments are very significant and have rightly been
reported as "a break through for the pro-hunting lobby".

The Countryside Alliance strongly favours Option 1
which promotes independent supervision. We continue
to win the arguments for the right to hunt, and your
commitment and determination will win the day for the
benefit of future generations and animal welfare in this
country.

Thank you all, who yet again gave up a bit more of
your lives to crusade for tolerance, liberty and livelihoods.

A very happy Christmas and New Year.

Sam Butler

4. Calling all angling supporters!
This week's Angling Times features a double page
article: "Should we turn our backs on the Alliance"
The magazine is encouraging readers to write in
regarding whether or not anglers should join forces
with the Alliance and turn out for the March,
(or whether angling is not under threat and anglers
should "go it alone".) Please could anglers and angling
supporters to write to Angling Times and express their
views. The RSPCA is vehemently opposed to angling,
as are IFAW and LACS. Additionally, the Campaign
for the Abolition of Angling (Pisces) has for a long while
been sending anti-angling propaganda to schools, helped
by funding from PETA. Now is the time for the rural
community to stand together for country sports.
