VOTE NOBODY MAY 3rd 2001

Sam Morgan | 29.12.2000 17:11

Vote NOBODY Campaign launched to campaign for a positive vote for NOBODY in local elections in England and Wales on May 3rd

A Campaign has been launched in Bristol to get a positive vote for NOBODY in May's local elections. Rather than advocate abstention the NOBODY campaign team are urging people to write NOBODY or NONE OF THE ABOVE on their ballot papers. These will be counted as spoilt ballot papers and if these are gresater in number than the votes cast for the winner the ward in question will be declared an autonmous zone free from council control. Campaign slogans include VOTE FOR NOBODY BECAUSE NOBODY CARES and NOBODY GIVES A FUCK and NOBODY WILL KEEP THEIR PROMISES. An active campaign of NOBODY kissing babies and NOBODY intervening in the other candidates meetings is promised. It is hoped the campaign will spread nationally so that NOBODY storms home countrywide on May 3rd.

a definite improvement on the simple no vote

this suggestion seems to be the equivalent of the USA "Write in" option (which has some legal status over there). Some people may have seen Michael Moore's "Vote Ficus" stunt a few months ago*. Astonishingly, this meant that a pot plant became an elected representative in some redneck town.

However, for the General Election, we should be a little more tactical. Most constituencies will have a fairly decent candidate on the ballot, a Green, a Socialist, a Raving Loony or so on.Even a Lib Dem might be worth a try if its a Labour marginal: remember, there's no risk of the Tories taking over and we need to reduce Blair's insane majority. But to do this you need to be on the electoral roll, so if you havent got yourself on, DO IT NOW BEFORE ITS TOO LATE!

Am I right in thinking that even a spoilt ballot paper is counted as a vote and that therefore the more people that do that the higher the percentage of people can have been said to be willing participants in this most farcical of farces ?

Would we not be better not voting at all and encouraging others not to vote as well as generally causing trouble during the campaigns and on polling day as suggested ?

a spoiled paper is not counted as a vote but will be counted as a spoiled paper. the number of spoiled papers is normally published so if they were a majority then we would all hear about it.

might be an idea to tear off the identifying electoral roll number from your paper so spoilers can't be so easily listed by the though police (yes, they used to list people who voted communist so they'd probably do it for this campaign too)
