Steve Bracks pied by amateur comedian "Duff" at Comedy Festival.

Bracks gets pie in his face again

Victorian Premier Steve Bracks became the victim of a cream pie thrower as he opened the Melbourne Comedy Festival today.

Mr Bracks was being interviewed by comedian Dave O'Neill as part of the festival launch ceremonies when the surprise attack occurred.

The pie thrower is believed to be a comedian.

He was wearing a sign around his neck saying "S11 protester".

Mr Bracks, who was covered in pie, kept on speaking.

"It seems to happen to me regularly," he later told reporters, as he wiped the cream from his face.

Last year the Premier was attacked by a pie-thrower at the opening of the Museum of Victoria.

Asked about the incident, a festival spokeswoman said: "That was definitely unplanned."

Mr Bracks later emerged for a press conference with the cream sponged off his suit and combed out of his hair. He grinned about the incident but told reporters he didn't want to give the matter any further publicity.

"I guess it's all part of the comedy festival," he said good-humouredly.

"I don't think it was planned.

"No, I'm not upset, you take it as it comes, that's life. But it doesn't worry me. There are too many other fantastic things in the comedy festival."

Comedy festival publicist Meredith King said organisers were not amused by the cream pie incident.

"It wasn't scripted, no-one knew it was going to happen. He just pushed past the security. And afterwards he ran away," Ms King said.

"It was not what the festival opening needed or wanted; it was most unfortunate from everyone's point of view and we're all appalled.

"It was quite inappropriate," Ms King said.

She complimented the premier for taking it in his stride.
