Mirror article on May Day

This is one of the funniest articles I've read so far - keep 'em coming mainstream media whores!

MIRROR INVESTIGATES: MAY DAY!

Police warn 200 shops and businesses targeted by Monopoly board rioters

MAY DAY wreckers are targeting more than 200 businesses on streets which feature in Monopoly.

Police will this week warn the shops and offices of the riot threat by mobs who have hijacked the board game for an internet campaign.

Officers fear the gangs who caused millions of pounds of damage in London last May 1 will strike again this year.

The anarchists' chilling threats are outlined on the website maydaymonopoly.net.

Police say the board game was chosen because it exudes capitalist principles.

A senior officer said: "We have seen this site and it's definitely a matter of real concern. We'll be spending the next few days visiting the businesses named on the site and warning them of the possible risks.

"We will give advice on how they can protect their property."

Targets include supermarkets, banks, fast-food chains, coffee shops, car showrooms and sportswear stores.

Also listed are Government and council offices, including Downing Street and the Inland Revenue, JobCentres, and the Foreign Office.

Famous institutions and landmarks under threat include the Cenotaph, Royal Opera House, the US Embassy and the London Palladium.

Some of the entries carry abusive explanations. The Savoy is described as "where rich and famous scum stay".

The BBC is "propaganda to the world".

A famous hairdressing salon is "where the rich and stupid pay loads for a cut and blow".

And the Armed Forces Careers Office is labelled "a thousand ways to kill".

One car showroom manager whose business is under threat said: "I'll be begging the police to be out here in force.

"I don't think these idiots understand that their protests have a real effect on the lives of ordinary people who work their socks off to make a living."

Hasbro, the maker of the board game, is considering legal action against the website.

A spokesman said: "Our lawyers are looking at it.

"Obviously we want to make it absolutely clear this has nothing to do with us."

Last year, May Day rioters attacked branches of McDonald's and Starbucks.

A statue of Sir Winston Churchill outside Parliament was defaced.

Scotland Yard fear a hard core of up to 100 anarchists plan to bring havoc to the streets.

Senior officers have vowed to operate "zero tolerance" policing towards rioters.

Letter to Mirror

Dear Mr Kelly

You are quick to label All people who take part in anti-capitalist demonstrations as 'wreckers' without really it seems, giving any real thought about what they are exactly demonstrating against. The truth is only the minority (say 1-2%) of demonstrators will be the one's that cause any unjustified trouble, because most of them will just want to get their message across without any violence. Yes it is true that you get some people with the 'lets destroy it all' mentality. But don't make out that all anti-capitalist demonstrators are like that. I also notice, on the image the way that you covered up half of 'the reason' with another image from last year's demonstration, showing that you show little sympathy with the protesters.

If you do another column in the newspaper about this subject, please give some of the reasons the 'genuine' protesters are demonstrating, to level out the subject.

Thanks for reading this message, if you feel you have to reply, by all means do so.

Corruption

17.04.2001 19:26

Wasn't it Piers Morgan and The Mirror who were mixed up in that insider trading scandal last year? They have that column called 'City Slickers'(!). Two of their journalists were buying shares in companies and then talking about them in glowing terms in order to increase the market value and get a quick profit( including allegedly Piers himself ). No suprise about the slant then. Shame it used to be a Left Wing paper though...

Our (moral) weapons are better than yours!

I remember seeing the Mirror's take on the May day protests last year where they branded the protesters as either yobs or very `silly' people.
I always find it so interesting when I hear about us people in the corporate media as they try to simplify the issues. What label is better, anti-capitalist or anti-globalisation?
No, it would be too polemical to even raise issues or even begin to explain what we are protesting about-to the truck driver with his mcfries, death burger and sweatshop labels!
A little knowledge is a dangerous thing.
Do most people prefer to be blind?
Of course it's so much harder to be who we are.
I am a strong promoter of peace, however, for any photograph of `violence' issued as propaganda by the media against protesters after the events of Mayday, for any moral condemnation by Blair and Straw playing in the web of labour spin, why shall we not be shown a little about the true terrorists and criminals and the violent attacks on democracy this age is suffering. Imagine..a little corporate violence makes the tabloid front pages...ahh well maybe, just maybe.

the mirror printed my (by then heavily edited) letter. what can anyone expect? i was an 18 year old school girl (hardly a yob, certainly not a terrorist). my point: just dont read it, unless you want a word fight like i did. we just cant win in that way.
