what is missing in your life, that you need to abuse brave, idealistic people ?

perhaps more weren't arrested because they didn't break the law ? and do you really think it should be illegal to wear sunglasses ?

Media Junkies

First I want to commend Sky News for all-day live broadcasting of the event (and condemn the BBC and CH4) and the honest journalism of (scared) reporters at the scene, but the commentary of those in the studio was inflamatory, They said of the people penned into Oxford St. during the day, they wern't the 'anarchist types' the police had predicted but a mixture, representing all causes, then by nightfall they said, their is a different element to the crowd now, people with masks on... (?) They were the SAME people, no-one had got in, no-one was getting out!

.... a great day.

Your comments beg the question:
'who do you percieve as the real enemy' in the issues played out on the streets of london yesterday. 'police?' 'hippies?' ! 'Independant media post it boards??' Why play out monopoly?
Thousands of people around the world, not to mention the bioregions on which we depend, face the onslaught of global capitalism on a day to day basis. I am immensely thankful for the diverse and creative forms of peaceful protest that took place yesterday and hope that it has played some part in raising awareness of these very serious issues.
And if a man wants to bang a drum, ride a bike or run for parliment ... you cannot condone him for standing up for what he feels in intuitively right. Thank you.
Stand proud you ruddy ecosophers you... the world is listening!

GDP-gross tic pride.

Something I learned ...

I really can't believe how much your stupid and false protest has made me respond to global multinational corporations. I've always been concerned with 3rd world debt and don't have any respect for McDonalds and similar organisations. However, I now feel inclined to take my 4 and 5 year old daughters to the next drive-in I encounter (anything to keep them away from deluded half-breed vandals who disgrace us in the eyes of the world.

Make a difference - get a job, live a life, give some love, stop masturbating in the mistaken belief it will cure cancer.

Huh?

02.05.2001 10:11

Exactly how was the protest stupid and false? You're concerned with 3rd World debt and have no respect for McDonalds: what you gonna do about it? If you don't like the way people are protesting, join in and do it how you think it should be done. I think it is you who is deluded when you call us "half breed vandals" (I'm not sure what you mean by that but then I'm guessing you don't either).

Oh, by the way, I have a job, I have a life, I give plenty of loving and the reason I masturbate is because it makes me feel happy. Everyone knows that cannabis is the only cure for cancer......

well said my friend

nicely put.

i was protesting in belfast n.ireland and it made catholics and protestants, men and women, white and black people to unite to abolish corperate greed and crimes against 3rd world countries. ask yourself these questions...would you like your children inslaved to make yuppie clothing that will sell for @£15-£50 a time? would you like your wife daugther, sister, mother forced to take pregnancy tests to see if they can keep working? and if pregant made to abort the child? in all honesty i don't think it's something you would let pass you by...so don't bitch ..HELP us to do something about it

You are soooo right.

A great day for the public caught by the police street sweeps, imprisoned and forced to stand for almost 7 HOURS without water or food, in the cold and rain without access to toilet facilities in cramped conditions which got worse and worse as police tightened their cordon throughout the afternoon and into the evening. It got so cramped people were shoulder to shoulder and to try and move through the trapped crowd was a difficult task.

The police surrounded these hundereds of people without warning and without provocation (who it should be pointed out had marched past scores of shops and even a Macdonalds or two without incident). They moved in swiftly and in more numbers than I've ever seen to trap everyone, tourists, workers, protestors alike.

We were then held for SEVEN HOURS.

There were many large plate glass windows exposed that were not boarded. These were left untouched throughout the afternoon. With the police pushing the people into a smaller and smaller area small clashed at the front occured. It was only after hours of imprisonment did any damage occur - it was only after this that police began to make arrangements to allow people to leave.

...which meant everyone was to be searched, questioned and photographed (well beyond the powers given to the police under section 60)

As it was this would have meant the last people out would have been freed around one or two in the morning, thus making their total time imprisoned to near on 12 hours.

This section 60 approach was used multiple times throughout the day even against peaceful gatherings of people as small as 15 (surrounded by riot police without warning, searched, questioned and photographed).

The police had made much in advance of there "zero tolerance" tactics saying anyone indulging in property damage would be arrested. I'm sure you approved of this stated intention. However on the day the experiences of thousands of protestors and other members of the public alike was that in fact the police did not 'facilitate peaceful protest', but that they prevented peaceful protest through the use of this section 60 order. Even Liberty has commented that this use of section 60 may constitute unlawful imprisonment.

Yes the police were under pressure from the media and the government but their actions amount to 'zero protest' not zero tolerance.

it's not fair

it's not fair what you said. You are being short sighted.Yes, it's true, i also saw a lot of people That don't really understand the meaning of a day like this, and are just fighting for the sake of it.But you probably are either blind, or you saw it all from the comfort of your house.don't believe all the media tells you. Some of us had serious issues to spreed about, and on the contrary to some, we took it to the street. The majority had specific things to say.It is possible to work and protest at the same time....we choose not to live repressed
