The evening: barricade 2 (pic)

alien8 | 02.05.2001 12:52

As it got dark, police started to violently disperse those who were still in the streets around Oxford Circus. People were chased through the streets, a few minor barricades were created...

More barricades

02.05.2001 16:54

More barricades might have worked really well especially as soon as they hemmed people in. Apparently the police had a big JCB barricade destroyer hidden somewhere.

Also not much stuff to make barricades with, probably no coincidence.

mayday

02.05.2001 18:12

i think this time it went really well, i was glad that many of what would have been 'prime targets' had bordered up their windows, it really seemed to curb violence, the message about our (the protesters) beliefs do seem to be getting through - slowly. however, we cannot just let this be a one day a year thing otherwise nothing will ever change. we have to organise all the small groups of people into a group that has more power, i urge an organised alliance of everyone who is unhappy with the state of capatalist Britain.

May Day

03.05.2001 11:31

The best thing that May day taught us was that the police have total control over our every movement, they kept us under group arrest because they could!

Opression is everwhere, Michael mansfield states

"there has been a relentless and co-ordinated attack on every fundamental freedom, part of which has emanated from and found support in the courts themselves. The most notable examples have been these: decisions restricting the right to collective protest and demonstration followed by the draconian measures contained in the Public Order Act 1986; the proposal to abolish the right of silence; the endorsement of the broadcasting ban and the requirement that journalists be forced to reveal their sources and, under PACE (the Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984), to give up photographic and film material to the police; the abolition of the 'public interest' defence under the Official Secrets Act 1989; the trade union and employment legislation (Employment Acts 1980, 1982, 1988 and 1990; Trade Union Act 1984) which effectively emasculates any attempt at independent trade unionism; increasing limitations on the right to jury trial and legal aid; and endorsements of the government's Poll Tax philosophy which will eventually reverse the time-honoured maxim of 'no taxation without representation".

What we need to open our eyes to, is that oppression is here too.

We need to act now and yes more frequently

why?

06.05.2001 17:16

Why are the media reporting this years mayday as a police success and last years as a fucking riot?last year a handfull of people smashed a macdonalds or two, graffited some monuments and threw a few rocks at the coppers.hardly a riot....definetely no worse than a city centre on a friday night.this year, buisnesses lose £20 million in lost trade and as i walked round london after i was released from my illegal imprisoment on holles street and what did i see?i saw as much damage as last year without a doubt.
the police were fuckin awfull this year and last.last year i witnessed them beating the living daylights out of a 16 year old girl for standidg her ground.....where was this?fuckin nelsons column...where were the cctv cameras?oh..they all turned away for a minute or two.
if mayday 2000 was a riot then this year was too,but the truth is....the only people guilty of rioting are 2 dozen thugs with balaclavas and gap shirts and 6000 tooled up pigs....fuck em all.
